Description

Our UPMC Corporate Legal team is searching for a Paralegal - Intermediate to join the department!  This is a regular, full-time position that primarily works daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some remote flexibility.

In this role, the Paralegal - Intermediate applies knowledge of the legal system and substantive and procedural law in providing work of a legal nature under the supervision of the attorneys of the UPMC Corporate Legal Department. This work requires knowledge of legal concepts, federal, state and local laws and the ability to research moderately complex legal matters. The Corporate Paralegal provides legal assistance and enables the UPMC attorneys to deliver legal services more efficiently and economically.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform patent searches and file patent applications.
  • Perform trademark searches and file trademark applications.
  • Review license agreements, inter-institutional agreements, and miscellaneous agreements pertaining to intellectual property jointly invented by UPMC and University inventors.
  • Conducts initial review of agreements, redlines agreement edits, and obtain signatures when needed.
  • Draft email and letters regarding complex matters.
  • Tracks International and Cancer Center Board documents.
  • Provide assistance to the attorneys within the Corporate Legal Department for necessary and appropriate legal research.
  • Completes moderately complex legal filings.
  • Develops and maintains a general understanding of internal processes and procedures.
  • Obtain legal documents and information from governmental agencies as required on behalf of UPMC hospitals and entities.
  • Perform moderately complex legal research for UPMC attorneys utilizing both local and electronic research tools.
  • Prepare and respond to third-party subpoenas, discovery requests, court orders, and other requests seeking medical, personnel, and payroll and business records.
  • Prepare and respond to third-party subpoenas seeking protected health information on an as needed basis.
  • Assist with the due diligence process associated with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for International deals by distributing forms for completion, collecting and reviewing all due diligence documents, creating a packet of due diligence materials, and forwarding to a Steering Committee for approval

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and five years of experience as a legal assistant
    • OR Paralegal certification and 3 years of experience as a legal assistant
    • OR Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience as a legal assistant.
  • Must have the ability to problem solve and make decisions independently within agreed parameters of attorney supervision and consistent with professional rules of responsibility for the attorney practice of law.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Computer operating mandatory with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Access, Westlaw, Adobe, Pacer, and internet applications.
  • Requisite typing skills of 60 to 70 wpm with a strong command of the English language and excellent proofreading skills.
  • Versatile in intellectual property matters.
