UPMC East is currently hiring a regular, fulltime Stationary Engineer to work various shifts including day, evening and overnight.  This position will also have weekend and holiday responsibility.

This position is responsible for the operation of the boilers, chiller plant, pneumatic tube and the overall operation of the physical plant 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.


  • Perform testing, treatment monitoring and adjustments of chemical treatment of steam boiler, cooling towers and closed hot and chilled water systems.
  • Complete work orders as needed during the off shifts and maintains computerized documentation.
  • Work with group lead and other engineering personnel to achieve maximum efficiency and reliable utility system operation.
  • Make judgments and evaluations on the critical level of components providing for a safe and reliable environment.
  • Safely operate the boiler plant and related systems in order to provide for the continuous operation of all hospital mechanical/electrical systems. Performance of preventive maintenance on components of the hospital essential to the utility systems.
  • Respond and addresses all alarms.
  • Operate the HVACR systems through the automated building management system (Automated Logic).



  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2 years experience in operation of boiler systems preferred
  • Plumbing, pipefitting, and electrical experience required.
  • Knowledge of maintenance requirements in a health care environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of energy management system preferred.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic tube systems, tv systems, phone systems, nurse call systems, bed repair, compressed air systems, medical gas systems, steam systems, vacuum systems, heating and cooling systems, chiller operations, fire alarm systems required after orientation period of 8 weeks.
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Pittsburgh Operating Engineers License/Stationary Engineer License preferred.
  • Driver's License
  • Act 34
