UPMC Health Plan and Workpartners  is seeking a Health Promotion Specialist!

The Health Promotion Specialist works collaboratively with other members of the health promotion team to provide health promotion programs and services to members using various modalities. The primary role of the health Promotion Specialist is the role of liaison between customers/employers and the Health Plan's Health Promotion Department. As a liaison the Health Promotion Specialist you will: Educate employers to the benefits of health promotion; Develop Health Promotion Strategies that integrate with the workplace culture of the employer; Assist in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of workplace health promotion programs.

At this time, we are actively seeking the below:

  • Corporate or employer-group health promotion or wellness experience.
  • Prior work experience in health insurance
  • CHES or CHES-eligible (Certified Health Education Specialist)
  • MS Office proficiency (especially PPT and Excel).
  • Team player with the ability to succeed in a variable environment with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills

Work/projects may require additional or weekend hours. This position could be a Hybrid role, but the hire would need to be in the Pittsburgh area to tend to clients within the region.  



  • Define health behaviors or concerns that would potentially improve health if targeted for change.
  • Provide timely feedback to employer leadership and individual primary care physicians as necessary with program work plans.
  • Assess members' readiness to address the targeted risk factor(s).
  • Engages with members in regular contacts over time to assist them in implementing the change plan, tracking progress, and maintaining changes over time.
  • Assist in writing and editing health promotion media and articles for in-house and external publications.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of and competence in the use of behavior modification skills.
  • Work with staff in Health Management, Health Promotion, and Account Management as necessary as a health promotion consultant.
  • Review employer group/individual member health information including but not limited toHealth Risk Appraisals data and Biometric Screening results and triage to appropriate health promotion programs.
  • Engage members who have specified risk factors in the collaborative development of a personalized behavior change plan to address the risk
  • Perform clinical evaluations, including blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, carbon monoxide, body mass index and other clinical measures.
  • Facilitate collaboration between external health resources and UPMC Health Plan.
  • Engage members who have specified risk factors in the collaborative development of a personalized behavior change plan to address the risk factor(s) in conjunction with their primary care physicians, if appropriate.
  • Assist in research, review and interpretation of published literature on fitness, nutrition, smoking cessation, obesity, diabetes, improving compliance to medication and/or medical regimens, back injury prevention, health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating and implementing, facilitating and evaluating employer health promotion programs.
  • Competently employ motivational strategies for encouraging individuals to explore motivation for change and enhance readiness.
  • Accurately document member or account contacts in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain knowledge of UPMC, UPMC Health Plan and community health resources.



  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, health education, nutrition, exercise physiology, counseling, social work, public health or a related field required.
    • Master's degree in psychology, health education, nutrition, exercise physiology, counseling, social work, public health or a related field preferred.
  • One year of experience in providing individual counseling or group counseling for behavioral change
  • One-year of experience planning, implementing and evaluating disease prevention and health promotion programs.
  • - Knowledge of or ability to learn a client-centered counseling approach that emphasizes nonjudgmental empathic interaction and collaborative development and implementation of behavior change plans required.
  • - Ability to perform minimally invasive and non-invasive clinical measures required.-
  • Nonsmoker required.-
  • Proven administrative abilities, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision required.-
  • High energy level and excellent written and oral communication skills required.-
  • Intermediate-level proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint as well as motivation to learn operations of new software to support program documentation and data collection required.-
  • Access to reliable transportation for required travel required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or CHES-eligible preferred.
