Sr. Professional Staff Nurse -- Emergency Department (Part Time)

We are currently hiring a part time Professional Staff Nurse to support the Emergency Department at our Oakland location. The Emergency Department is a state-of-the-art, 22-bed Level 3 Trauma unit that opened to the public in 2014. The ED handles critically ill patients and other emergency medical issues, including OB/GYN, geriatric, and medical-surgical including bariatric, orthopedic, oncology, and stroke patients. The majority of ED nurses at Magee are trained to perform forensic exams for sexual assault as well. Patient volume and acuity are variable and can change quickly, making the ED an extremely fast-paced, unpredictable environment where rapid problem-solving is necessary to address evolving needs and priorities. Our RNs work a rotating schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor. As a part time employee, you will work 24 hours per week, including 1 weekend shift per month (can work more weekends if you desire).

The Professional Staff Nurse is a valued step in the UPMC nursing career ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement; salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience. Six months experience is required for Professional Staff Nurses.

Responsibilities:

  • Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patients that involves the patient as partner and considers the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues for the patient within an episode of care.
  • Practices solid communication skills and can articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.
  • Creates a caring and compassionate patient-focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience required.
  • Med/Surg or ED experience preferred.
  • BSN preferred, not required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • MWH Required: For the Emergency Department Advanced Cardiac Life Support as required and Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation as recommended.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.
  • UPMC approved nursing certification preferred.
  • Upon hire- Annual completion of 2 professional contributions selected from department, hospital or system goals, and approved by your Unit Director OR certification and 1 professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system goals, and approved by your Unit Director as set forth through UPMC's My Nursing Career Ladder. Certification not required if Master's in nursing or DNP is held.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
