UPMC's Enterprise Infrastructure Technology department is actively hiring an Intermediate Systems Engineer!
 
This position will be part of the Unix Support team, responsible for provisioning and support of UPMC’s IBM iSeries (AS400), AIX and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and other Linux solutions. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience on IBM iSeries (AS400),  AIX and Linux systems. The team member will be further responsible for day-to-day server operations, providing end-user support, contribute to team documentation, projects and seeks out process improvement. Acts as liaison to vendors for advanced troubleshooting.

Responsibilities:
  • Interactions with Others - Successfully completes projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach.   • Troubleshooting/Critical Thinking - Independently resolve issues. Offer input on issue resolution and mentor less experienced staff with issue resolution.
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects.
  • Project Management - Complete assigned project-related tasks with independently. Responsible for time tracking and updating documentation. Lead small to medium-sized projects. Collaborate with other technical teams, as appropriate, for successful completion of project. Participate in POC evaluations.
  • Self-Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, trainings, partnering with more senior members of team, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from senior team members for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • End-user support - Resolve complex end-user support issues independently. Responsible for assisting less experienced staff with end-user support issues. Responsible for ensuring there is resolution or that the end-user is connected with the appropriate resources for issues resolution.
  • Maintenance/Upgrades - Develops maintenance/upgrade plans with the assistance of lead/expert. Responsible for maintenance and upgrades. Responsible for assisting with Disaster Recovery Plan

Qualifications

  • Typically has 2+ years' experience with complex systems environments through education or practical experience.
  • Mastery of standards IT procedures and protocols.
  • Shows the ability to lead junior team members with enforcing compliance of procedures and protocols.
  • This position may be required to maintain a 24/7 off-hours support as part of a rotation within the team. The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues in the rotation.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • IBM System i (iSeries, AS400) Experience
    • 5250 (green screen) and Client Access (or ACS)
    • Experience with IBM's BRMS and AJS helpful ( backup software and job scheduler)
    • Experience with Mimix HA software a plus
  • Basic knowledge (2+ years) of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and/or IBM AIX
  • Has some knowledge of Kubernetes, RH OpenShift and / or any other container based platform.
  • Experience with iSeries, AIX or Linux servers in a virtualized environment
  • Strong working knowledge of IT best practices, including change control management
  • Additional experience related to other operating systems Ubuntu, Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE a plus
  • Some experience with scripting, including Bash, Python, Ruby, Perl
  • Experience with Red Hat Insights, IBM NIM, PowerVC is a plus
  • Knowledge about configuration management tools, such as Ansible, Puppet etc.
  • Familiarity with SELinux, load balancing, firewalls, DNS, etc.
  • Good understanding of systems integration to design systems meeting needs of the enterprise
  • Supports our servers through the life-cycle:  Provisioning, Supporting, Updating, Patching, and Retirement of servers.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, critical thinking skills and strong technical learning aptitude is a plus
  • Strong team player capable of working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

This is a remote position with workspace available in Forbes Tower (Pittsburgh, PA) if needed
