Job Summary: 

UPMC has full-time opportunities for individuals who are looking to provide top-notch customer service to our patients. We are seeking candidates who will work within our Revenue Cycle Mobile Patient Access department as a Patient Access Representative. In this role, you will play a critical part in our patients' experience by registering patients, scheduling appointments, updating demographic and insurance information, and much more!

Candidates interested in this position must be willing to travel to various UPMC physician offices and outpatient offices within Allegheny County, and occasionally some locations just outside of Allegheny County, to work a variety of shifts during daylight hours each week (start as early as 7:00am or end as late as 5:30pm).  This position will require full-time availability. You will typically work 8.5 hour shifts Monday through Friday.

  • Interview and pre-register patients at the time of or prior to the visit date.
  • Input patient information into the computer to initiate a medical record and a bill.
  • Obtain and update demographic, next-of-kin, and insurance information, including referrals/authorizations on all patients as needed.
  • Confirm/Verify insurance benefits with the appropriate carrier via on-line verification systems or telephone inquiries.
  • Obtain signature of patient or family member for consent to treatment and financial responsibility following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules and regulations.
  • Collect and records patient payments at time of service. Respect patient confidentiality and withholds restrictive information according to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Schedule patient appointments in accordance with UPMC and department-specific guidelines.
  • Appropriately distribute/triage phone calls to other areas and/or clinical providers.
  • Assist with administrative duties in the office including but not limited to scanning of medical records and faxing.


  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Two years of experience in a medical, billing, fiscal or customer service function is preferred.

  • Medical terminology and third party health care coverage experience preferred.

  • Experience with personal computer based applications, other various office equipment and proficient typing skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • Initiative to work productively with minimal supervision.

  • Able to work well under pressure.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance

  • Act 33 Child Abuse

  • Act 73 FBI
