Psychologist I (Part Time) - Western Psychiatric Hospital


This department has a new research project focused on intervention for offspring of parents with bipolar disorder. Youth are randomized to either receive Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) or Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Program (HL). The project will also be monitoring sleep/circadian disruptions and following youth over 18 months to observe outcomes. 2) A 2-site study focused on examining brief interventions for suicidal adolescents aimed at bridging care in the critical time (6 months) between inpatient discharge and outpatient care, when there is a higher risk of suicidal behavior. This study will analyze the single and additive effects of two inpatient unit interventions for suicidal youth called As Safe As Possible (ASAP) and BRITE. The part time Psychologist will be conducting weekly clinical supervision for study therapeutic staff members as well as overseeing the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors arm of the KEY study. The role for the ASAP study will be to provide therapeutic skills to youth using Motivational Interviewing and present Distress Tolerance and Emotional Regulation skills to youth and their families.  As well as provide supervision to therapeutic staff.

This position is grant funded.


  • Provides crisis sessions to support and assist patients and therapeutic staff experiencing acute distress and/or symptoms, as needed.
  • Provides behavioral health services, using empirically validated treatments and interventions.
  • Participates in regular supervisory meetings with direct supervisor to review adherence to program standards.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain accurate and complete records and data collection, performed in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrates highly developed knowledge and skill in the area of differential diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.
  • Consults and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams regarding patient care and treatment planning.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant literature and empirically validated treatments.
  • Performs psychological assessment with accurate diagnostic impressions.
  • Provides behavioral health services using an acute and maintenance model.
  • Schedules sufficient volume of patients so that direct service productivity standards are maintained within the department.
  • Maintains knowledge of the literature relevant to the assigned patient population.
  • Works collaboratively with other service lines at UPMC and outside agencies assuring continuity of care with referral sources and other providers.


  • Doctoral degree in Psychology (PsyD or PhD) from an accredited institution.
  • 3 years of experience in Psychology or related field preferred.
  • Excellent clinical assessment/therapy skills to work with patients, families and therapeutic staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Active PA Psychology License

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Psychologist
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
