The Sr. International Referral Liaison assures proper translation of communication between the patient and family and any other UPMC employee throughout the patient's stay in the hospital and in Pittsburgh. Ability to demonstrate general verbal exchange, medical/surgical details, written forms and educational materials. Communicate any issues to be addressed to the Manager and assists to resolve them.



  • Assist the Manager in recruiting volunteers and updating the Language Bank. Aid in developing foreign language resources for use when International Referral Liaisons are not available.
  • Responsible for facilitating the communication process between Hospital physicians/staff and Spanish speaking patients and their families by providing interpreter services and translation of written communications.
  • Function as an ambassador for the international patient by facilitating their stay at UPMC and in Pittsburgh, making travel, ground transportation and housing arrangements and providing the needed community resources.
  • Provides appropriate training to volunteers, casual employees and potential new staff
  • Monitors referrals form external referring entities.
  • Assist the Patient Finance Coordinator to communicate any financial information to the patient correctly and clearly to facilitate the deposit of funds prior to rendering medical services and collection of outstanding funds after the treatment. 
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the physician representatives for each clinical service receiving international patients.
  • Responsible for proper translation of communication and interpretation between the patient and family and any other UPMC employee throughout the patient's stay in the hospital and in Pittsburgh.
  • Assist in the collection of information to track international patients.
  • Periodically verifies accuracy and completion of database entry to ensure meaningful reporting.
  • Translate and send correspondence between UPMC physicians and referring physician of the patient.
  • Translate educational materials, hospital forms and pertinent literature for the patient. 
  • Coordinate and participate in improvement efforts with the Manager and other UPMC departments to ensure that the international patients receive appropriate, five-star, quality service. 
  • Act as a liaison to sponsoring embassies and/or referring physicians and medical centers; provide relevant information regarding UPMC programs and services.
  • Assist manager building new referral bases with physicians and entities who may refer patients.
  • Assist obtaining feedback from referring entities about their experiences with the hospital.



  • B.A. degree required in the target language, social work, liberal arts, public relations or a related field preferred. 5 years of relevant experience - 3 years in healthcare required.
  • Strong verbal and communication skills in the English language, as well as the target language.
  • Act professionally always and must interact effectively with individuals from various countries.
  • Experience working with physicians or physician staff and familiarity with physician relations

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
