Our UPMC Corporate Legal team is searching for a Senior Associate Counsel, Claims & Litigation to join the Pittsburgh team! 

As the Senior Associate Counsel, Claims & Litigation, you will coordinate medical malpractice and general liability litigation for the entire UPMC system and all insureds of UPMC's captive insurance companies.

  • Oversee UPMC’s defense in medical malpractice and general liability litigation.

  • Update and solicit input from UPMC’s clinical and executive leadership regarding litigation defense.

  • Participate in the claims settlement process with senior leadership of UPMC’s captive insurance program.

  • Participate in the selection and management of outside counsel.

  • Serve as the interface between outside counsel and UPMC management and employees.

  • Assist in selection of expert witnesses.

  • Participate in settlement discussions and recommendations.

  • Become familiar with and use available technology to ensure appropriate tracking of claims and coordinated reporting.

  • Participate in training of lawyers, medical and administrative personnel in malpractice prevention.

  • Conduct executive safety rounds, team training, simulation training, mock trials, or depositions.

  • Oversee and participate in mediations and arbitrations and court settlement conferences.

  • Participate in claims data review with department chairs, risk managers and insurance program representatives.

  • Participate in reviewing policies and procedures and creating new policies and procedures as deemed necessary based on outcomes of claims or cases.



  • J.D. Degree required with a minimum of 12 years experience in the following areas:
    • Medical Malpractice experience is strongly preferred. 
    • Managing outside counsel in malpractice and general liability cases and/or trial of such cases preferred;
    • Knowledgeable of the Pennsylvania medical malpractice and Mcare Act is strongly preferred;
    • Admission to Bar; eligibility for admission to the bar in Pennsylvania required
    • The practice of law in a firm and/or corporate legal office required;

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
