UPMC's Enterprise Technology Services department is hiring an Associate Database Administrator for their DBA team. The DBA team provides day-to-day management of the database management system for critical enterprise applications.
This position will work under the general direction of the management team and senior staff, this entry-level position assists with day to day support of database systems. The successful candidate will maintain systems, identify and resolve basic issues or problems that arise within the database software. Responsibilities include but are not limited to installing and configuring, performance tuning, refresh/recovery of databases, and partnering with application owners and managers across multiple groups within UPMC etc. This position will assume on-call support responsibilities on a rotational basis.

  • Maintenance - Works closely with the application team to continually maintain systems with routine maintenance and patching as outlined by the RDBMS vendor through major and minor upgrades in a timely fashion as they are released.
  • Scripting - basic understanding of OS-based scripting, develops an understanding to run scripts successfully that automate and orchestrate DBA-related tasks.
  • Customer Service - Maintains professional relationship with application owner/teams, provide support as needed. Facilitate a productive dialogue relative to the success of the services provided.
  • Security - Understand server, instance and database roles and permissions.
  • Self-Development - Continual self-learning to master the basics of administration and architecture of RDBMS platform supported, seeks feedback from senior team members and incorporates those into work efforts.
  • Project Management - Complete DBA related tasks as they are associated with the application team and initiatives of the application or project.
  • Troubleshooting - Respond to tickets and other notification of issues. Assist in determining the cause of database problems, determine a solution and implement the appropriate actions to correct.
  • Auditing - Respond to requests from Internal Audit, external auditors as directed and complete SOX requirements in a timely fashion as needed.
  • Database Management - Support multiple implementations at various versions and support levels. Install, configure and provide day to day support after implementation, including off-hours as needed.
  • Infrastructure - understands the basics of operating systems, networking, storage and other underlying components of the infrastructure as it relates to the RDBMS supported.
  • Recovery - basic understanding of recovery strategy from backup and recovery to advanced business continuity and disaster recovery options for supported RDBMS and able to support these.
  • Database Availability - Learn and follow change control procedures for work impacting database availability.


  • Typically has a basic IT background either through education or practical experience.
  • Typically understands basic database concepts through course work or at least 1 year of practical experience as an operation DBA.
  • Basic understanding of security principles.Basic understanding of the various database environments and importance of each from development and test to production and disaster recovery.
  • Knowledge of query language for RDBMS supported.
  • Highly driven to self-learn and understand DBA role and expectations of the position.Ability to work independently and contribute to the team regularly.Proficient in communications with customers, peers and management.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidate should have knowledge of/experience with the following: 
    • SQL Server
    • SQL Queries
    • Windows Server
    • Powershell

This is a remote position with workspace available if needed in Pittsburgh, PA
