Crisis Trainer - Crisis Training Institute of UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital


The Crisis Training Institute of UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital provides a wide range of programs and consulting services. Our programs focus on:

  • Crisis prevention and intervention
  • Stress management
  • Suicide intervention
  • The mental health component of disaster response

These programs and services help behavioral health, schools, health care, substance abuse programs, and public safety professionals perform effectively in crisis-related or potentially violent situations.

Crisis Training Institute programs help to:

  • Increase confidence and intervention skills in crisis situations
  • Maximize team effectiveness and cohesion in the midst of a crisis
  • Minimize the impact of traumatic stress on individuals involved in a crisis response
  • Understand the impact of trauma and the importance of providing trauma-informed care
  • Identify key factors in the safe resolution of crisis situations
  • Assist staff in the use of stress appraisal to identify ways to cope with stressful situations
  • Enhance suicide awareness and provide intervention skills to work more effectively with an individual at risk for suicide

The Crisis Trainer will provide crisis management consultation in regard to environmental assessments, treatment planning specific to violent patients or behavioral problems, and levels of intervention. Willingness to travel, including weekends and overnight is required. 


  • Teach all levels of Crisis Management-related programs to management and staff of WPH, UPMC affiliates, and contracted external organizations.
  • Provide internal clinical support within WPH as needed (when not providing training).
  • Assist in the development and implementation of special programs for unique populations.
  • Provide follow up training and re-certification as required by organization and regulations.
  • Complete all documentation and record keeping as required.
  • Update Comprehensive Crisis Management Training and other crisis related trainings to regulatory policy and program quality as needed.
  • Provide train the trainer and trainer re-education sessions and assess the competence of trainers as well as Comprehensive Crisis Management Trainings to UPMC staff.
  • Undertake other tasks assigned in support of the WPH mission.
  • Provide crisis training support to staff and consult with CCM trainers.
  • Gather and evaluate data as part of the Quality Assessment Monitoring.
  • Participate in marketing activities to promote and represent CTI.


  • Master's degree required in Education or related behavioral health field with two years of training experience required


  • a Bachelor's degree in Education or related behavioral health field with four years of training experience required.
  • Training experience may include curriculum development, assessing core clinical competencies of staff and developing training programs to improve core competencies, developing learning objectives, etc.
  • Experience and knowledge regarding the range of community-based and/or state hospital treatment programs in western Pennsylvania is desirable.
  • Trainer certification in Comprehensive Crisis management, Psychological first aid, and DCORT training is preferred.
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients.
  • Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
