Research Associate WPIC (Sleep, Affective Neuroscience, and Development)


Join the Sleep, Affective Neuroscience, and Development laboratory team (! Our lab studies how changing sleep and neural systems over adolescent development contribute to mood disorders.

This Research Associate position involves assisting with multiple aspects of NIMH-funded research that uses sleep-circadian and neurobehavioral assessments to understand longitudinal mood outcomes in adolescents and young adults. This individual’s primary responsibility is to lead data collection for studies involving questionnaires, fMRI scans, sleep-circadian assessments, and computer tasks. Other duties include screening, recruitment, data entry, project administrative tasks, and oversight of undergraduate students. This individual will work closely with a lab coordinator, other research staff, and the data manager, as well as with the staff of the Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience Center and the Magnetic Resonance Research Center.

This ideal candidate is highly organized; detail-oriented; possesses strong interpersonal skills including teamwork, dependability, flexibility, and leadership; and has at least one domain of relevant research experience (running/processing functional MRI tasks or sleep-circadian rhythms data analysis or mood disorders assessments). Some evening hours required.

This position is grant funded.


  • Conducting study assessments and leading data collection for studies involving questionnaires, sleep-circadian assessments, fMRI scans, pupillometry, and computer tasks. Ensuring accurate and complete data collection.
  • Screening, recruiting, and consenting adolescent and young adult participants.
  • Assisting, as needed, with scheduling assessments, managing participant payments, data entry, project administrative tasks, and oversight of undergraduate students.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with laboratory-wide study investigators and staff.
  • Demonstrate respect and sensitivity to study participants. Interact skillfully with adolescent, young adult, and clinical populations.
  • Handle sensitive clinical and research data in compliance with University, State, and federal requirements.
  • Complete and pass on-line ethics and research practice training modules as required by the University of Pittsburgh and the National Institutes of Health. Completes other trainings as required by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
  • Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.


  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related field. 
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
  • At least one year of previous work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is preferred.
  • Prior experience collecting and organizing sleep/circadian or fMRI data is preferred.
  • Previous experience with adolescents and/or families is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings.
  • Computer skills in data management, statistical analysis programs, or programming helpful, but not required.

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
