Physician Referral Liaison

Develop and coordinate all referral source direct marketing and sales activity for UPMC in North Central Pa. Coordinate and manage sales/staff activity, account management, and development/maintenance of referral statistics. Act as a liaison with regional referral sources including hospitals, physicians, and office managers. Identify new service opportunities, program development, and acquisitions. Support the medical staff strategic initiatives, especially related to employed and independent practicing physicians.


  • Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.
  • Serve as ombudsman to identify and resolve issues related to relationships, referrals, or other operational matters and refer issues to the appropriate leader. Track and follow up on issues.
  • Develop and coordinate all referral source direct marketing and sales activity for UPMC in North Central Pa. Represent regional centers of excellence and other allied services as appropriate.
  • Produce monthly activity reports on visits; identify opportunities and issues; track progress and resolution.
  • Meet regularly with referral sources to educate them on the services available through UPMC.
  • Facilitate educational programs for referral sources on specific topics and ensure that clients and referral sources have adequate marketing information and literature.
  • Collect and analyze trend data from financial, business planning, and other sources in collaboration with director to target opportunities to grow strategic volume or address issues.
  • Promote the organization through education to hospitals, physicians, office managers, and other customers. Work closely with leaders and medical directors to manage accounts and to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Provide market intelligence to service lines.
  • Develop and maintain referral information through the use of Data Warehouse and other available billing data.
  • Assume responsibility for personal development and education.
  • Monitor the healthcare environment for trends and opportunities for UPMC. Research and make recommendations for new program development.


  • Bachelor's degree required
    • Bachelor's in business or healthcare field preferred.
  • Three years physician outreach and/or customer service experience working for a healthcare, pharmaceutical, medical device, or related business required.
