Laboratory Research Coordinator


This position is for a Research Coordinator working in the UPMC Clinical Labs. This position will involve contact with research study coordinators, both internal and external to UPMC, to provide test information, assess workload, obtain necessary approvals, prioritize studies, ensure resulting pathways, troubleshoot issues as well as specimen processing duties.  This position will be standard business hours Monday thru Friday.



  • Understand the complexities of research study set up needs and serve as primary contact for research study coordinators.
  • Knowledgeable of the test activity menu within the UPMC clinical labs and reference labs utilized.
  • Proficient in utilization of all necessary IT systems required to complete responsibilities.
  • Provides guidance and training to research study coordinators as needed.
  • Participate in standard operating procedure development.
  • Receive, process, label, distribute, store and ship blood specimens obtained from research subjects.
  • Gather and store specimens for retrieval pick up by study coordinators.
  • Monitor receipt and resulting of samples, when study warranted.
  • Assist in data collection and data entry and quality control of data.
  • Maintain a safe clean laboratory-working environment including appropriate equipment maintenance and usage, by conforming to laboratory and hospital policies and standards.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage.
  • Follow appropriate policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Follow all regulations regarding health and safety concerning the handling of biohazardous patient samples or sharps to prevent exposure.
  • Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.



  • B.A. degree, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Experience in IRB or clinical labs is a plus.Honest Broker certification if not currently certified, this must be obtained during orientation period.
  • Computer Skills with Microsoft Office Products.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with patients, staff and investigators as well as maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, must be able to work a flexible schedule based on study needs.
