Student Behavioral Associate

Description

UPMC Northwest is seeking a Student Behavioral Associate currently enrolled in a social work / psychology / nursing program to assist in the provision of medical and psychiatric patient care. You'll receive practical experience relevant to your education track /career goals.

The Behavioral Health Unit includes a one-story, 28-bed behavioral health building, adjoined to the hospital via an enclosed walkway which provides care to individuals in acute crisis with a range of diagnoses.

 Shifts: Based upon YOUR AVAILABILITY

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the nurse and other direct care staff in the provision of physical care and clinical intervention as assessed by client needs.
  • Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology and practices in the delivery of patient care.
  • Encourages patients to perform or assists them in the performance of activities of daily living.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established policies.
  • Takes initiative to ensure that unit environment is maintained..
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Manage crisis situations effectively using positive approaches.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and other activities.
  • Attend a minimum of 1 unit based of Institute wide in-service yearly.
  • Maintains on-going communication with the treatment team and charge nurse regarding observations of patients medical and behavioral symptoms and the care provided.

 

Qualifications

  • Current full-time enrollment in an accredited school in healthcare related baccalaureate (Psychology, Counseling, Biology, or related field)

  OR

  • Current full-time enrollment in a diploma, associate, or bachelor level nursing program.
  • Must be available and agree to work weekends and holidays. Must be able to work overtime as required by WPIC.
  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.
  • In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCM) training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
  •  Act 34
  • OAPSA
