Research Principal Sr (Sweet Lab)

Description

Sweet Lab: Our research team is focused on understanding the mechanisms which lead to the generation of psychotic symptoms (delusions and hallucinations) which may occur in multiple disorders. These symptoms are core features of the most common psychotic disorder, schizophrenia, but also occur in about 50% of individuals with Alzheimer Disease. We have proposed that there are common genetic risk factors and vulnerable brain circuits that act together to cause positive symptoms across these disorders. The Research Principal Sr will provide advanced level research and/or clinical and administrative support to the study. They will mentor, train, & assist with supervising junior research staff, assist with laboratory and research activities, conduct experiments for research projects that focus on the development of cerebral cortex circuitry in cellular and animal models.

This position is grant funded.

Responsibilities:

  • Mentor, train, and assist with supervising junior research staff.
  • Provide advanced level research and/or clinical and administrative support for the research study including preparing and presenting presentations, analyzing and interpreting data, collaborating with principal investigator on manuscripts, scientific articles, and grant submissions.
  • Perform cell-based and molecular biology assays such as: RNA/DNA/protein extraction, RNA/DNA/protein quantification, mRNA expression analysis (qPCR/RNA-seq), Western blotting, lipid-based transfections in cell culture, site-directed mutagenesis, etc.
  • Maintain mammalian cell lines (e.g., primary rat neurons, HEK cells, and IPSCs) and conduct in vitro assays.
  • Performing survival and non-survival surgeries in rodent models, assist with colony maintenance duties
  • Perform IHC, confocal imaging, and image analysis
  • Acquire and perform other research techniques as specified by the PI
  • Maintain an accurate record of data collection methods, results, and interpretations.
  • Develop research projects including protocol design, data collection and analysis, and data storage.
  • Communicate progress of research projects to research investigators via in-person meetings, oral presentations, and/or written reports. 
  • Ensure that research projects and environment comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of manuscripts and grant applications.
  • Assist with obtaining approval for research projects from review committees.
  • Supervise and train research assistants with respect to research activities and practice including specific lab techniques, data collection and analysis, record keeping, and scientific integrity.
  • Perform general laboratory maintenance tasks including ordering and receiving of lab supplies and lab equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree required preferably in Psychology, Neuroscience, Counseling, Sociology, or related research field with a minimum of three years of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.

OR

  • PHD in Psychology, Neuroscience, Counseling, Sociology, or related research field with a minimum of one year of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology required.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
