Manager, Quality & Patient Safety


UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson are searching for a Manager, Quality & Patient Safety. The selected candidate will be regionally based between UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson with a day-based schedule of Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Off-hour meetings and Saturday assignments may be required. Six Sigma certification is preferred along with certification in quality or patient safety.

Manages and educates hospital and system staff on care of patients; consults with management and staff:, and communicates evidence based, effective patient safety strategies to others within the hospital organization. Quality Management function facilitates and manages new and ongoing projects specific to the Quality area. The Quality manager will also assist the hospital and ambulatory settings with Quality Improvement projects.



  • Oversees the hospital's system for internal and external reporting for quality and patient safety and infrastructure failures.
  • Initiates and oversees the development of a comprehensive quality and patient safety program inclusive of the analysis and trending of data. Demonstrates strong management skills by prioritizing and balancing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Partners with hospital leaders to implement change. Actively collaborates with Executives, Senior Director, and Physician staff to ensure effective processes and system are established and maintained to meet BH System and department quality and patient safety goals.
  • Uses measurement and analytics skills to identify areas of improvement included and not limited to variations in LOS, avoidable delays, clinical trends, standard documentation, required reporting metrics, performance indicators and clinical outcomes.
  • Serves as chairperson of the quality and patient safety council
  • Coordinates with the hospital triad to keep them informed of quality and patient safety priorities, initiatives and incidents.
  • Develops effective communication and partnerships to maintain quality and patient safety as a high priority.
  • Proactively educates and communicates with leadership and staff regarding quality and patient safety programs.
  • Remains fully informed of national and local quality and patient safety mandates.
  • Serves as point person for professional and general liability cases.
  • Facilitates the investigation and root cause analysis process as appropriate
  • Develops formal and informal quality and patient safety education.
  • Manages the hospitals Patient Safety Plan
  • Recognizes immediate jeopardy situations that places patients or the hospital at risk.



Bachelor's degree in relevant field required- Master's degree, or UPMC approved certification, or completion of 2 years in a 4 years Bachelor's to PhD/DNP program required - Minimum of 7 years related healthcare experience required- Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers,, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, patients/families.- Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple changing priorities and specialized equipment.- Exemplary critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.- Demonstrates a progressive leadership track- Skilled in Microsoft office and other data applications- Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing and lifting.
