Chaplain | Western Psychiatric Hospital



As a growing service within the Behavioral Health System, the Full Time Chaplain will provide Pastoral and Spiritual Care to patients and staff. Western Psychiatric Hospital has 263 inpatient beds and is one of the largest academic psychiatric hospitals in the country with specialized units for both adults and children.   • Understand consensus building and negotiation.
  • Communicate well in a professional exchange of ideas with staff.
  • Share on-call responsibilities.
  • Provide pastoral care in routine and emergent situations.
  • Lead worship as scheduled.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in setting goals.
  • Complete required documentation.
  • Offer expertise in leading groups and continuing education.
  • Working in/contributing to life of interfaith team.
  • Knowledge and understanding of department standards and policies.
  • Seek opportunities for continuing education.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings as required.
  • Commitment to patient/family/staff centered pastoral care.


  • Master of Divinity (MDiv.) degree or related degree.
  • ACCC or SCA Board Certified Chaplains (BCC) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 4 units ICPT Clinical Pastoral Education strongly preferred.
  • Respect and acceptance of various religious values and traditions.
  • Understanding of health care ministry.
  • Spiritual maturity and emotional stability.
  • Mental health experience preferred.
  • Virtual ministry experience preferred. 
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide pastoral care to patients served.
  • Must know the principles of growth and development to age-specific needs.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Cultural Humility.  Sensitivity to multi-cultural/religious diversity.
  • Ability to adapt to on-going change.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Professional certification or eligibility as Chaplain from a national certifying organization required, (e.g., The College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the National Association of Jewish Chaplains). Ordination or Commission to function in a ministry of pastoral care and endorsement by his/her denomination authority required. Professional certification or eligibility from one of the two CPE institutions that are accredited by the DoE which are the Institute of Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT) and the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) – strongly preferred.

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
