UPMC is actively seeking experienced Operating Room RNs interested in joining our SWAT (“Supplemental Work and transition”) nursing team! 

 

This OR SWAT RN position is also eligible for a sign-on bonus! -

  • 1+ years of experience:  2-year commitment, $15,000

*Current UPMC employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus program.

 

While on assignment, our permanent SWAT nurses rotate to various PA facilities including UPMC Altoona, Bedford Memorial, Hamot, Horizon, Jameson and Northwest, and gain rare, impressive, and highly desirable professional experiences and build widely varied skill sets. Assignments are typically 6 weeks in length and travel requirement is approximately 50% of assignments.

They will be utilized to fill shifts in all OR areas of high need. SWAT OR nurses must be willing to work at all UPMC facilities and accept regular rotational assignments as determined by a SWAT team supervisor. The SWAT OR nurse will NOT be required to be on call, otherwise chosen by the participant and approved by the Unit Director and SWAT team supervisor. Off shift and weekend coverage may be required in facilities that have extended need for shift coverage.

  

This opportunity also includes:

 

  • Meal reimbursement
  • If hotel accommodations are needed, they will be arranged by the facility or reimbursed back (Assignment/travel must be 60 miles or more from home address to qualify for overnight accommodations).
  • Mileage reimbursement to any facility greater than 30 miles from your home address

 

Responsibilities:

  • Function independently with one day orientation, unless otherwise specified.
  • Preparation of operating room prior to operational services by preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure functionality. Count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments according to policy. Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
  • Must be able to function in two specialty areas of OR nursing. Communicate educational needs when necessary. Maintain contact availability for schedule changes when needed. Must be flexible in scheduling to the requirements of the unit assigned.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated competence in operating room professional nursing practice. 
  • Minimum of 2 years operating room nursing experience is required. 
  • Must be able to circulate independently in general surgery, GYN surgery, Orthopedic, and urology surgery cases. 
  • Must be able to pass all UPMC required testing for Registered Nurses. 
  • SWAT Nurses must agree to be available to work 72 hours in a bi-weekly pay period and will follow the scheduling requirements of the operating room department assigned. 
  • The ability to scrub in any specialty is preferred.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • OAPSA

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
