UPMC Corporate Revenue Cycle is looking for a motivated Data Engineer to join the Business Optimization team to improve data access and support the pipeline development of analytics applications.  This position will work at our Quantum I building and have the opportunity for a hybrid work from home and in office schedule.

An ideal candidate will have a combination of solid business analysis experience, data engineering best practice, and knowledge about the Azure Cloud environment. The data engineer should be able to communicate the status of work at all levels, providing development support throughout the project lifecycle. We are looking for someone who can work collaboratively with teams of different technical skillsets. The Business Optimization Group: Acts as a technology hub for the Revenue Cycle and is responsible for leading the adoption of new technology in UPMC Finance. We are involved in a variety of projects from stakeholders at all levels of UPMC that require prediction, automation, process improvement, or strategic analysis. We are a small, collaborative group that requires our team members to wear many hats to ensure the success of projects.

  • Collaborate on the strategy of new cloud data solutions in the Healthcare Finance / Revenue Cycle space. Responsible for understanding and cleansing data from a variety of data sources (Operational, Financial, Administrative) and advise/execute on data extraction strategy to support analytical projects.
  • Gather and process raw data (structured unstructured) at scale that meet functional business requirements (including writing Python scripts, REST API calls, SQL Queries, etc.). Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture using on-premise and cloud solutions such as SQL Server, Azure Pipelines, Azure Functions, Azure Data Factory and Synapse Analytics.
  • Responsibilities include documenting stakeholder requirements, the data, sources and pipeline designs., Assist in the education and mentoring of new members of the team, primarily in process and procedure. Other responsibilities as needed for projects.




  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM or technical field and five + years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five + years of experience with Business Analysis.
  • Two + years of experience with Power BI, Tableau or other Business Intelligence tools.
  • Database design and development experience.
  • Programming expertise in SQL and Python.


  • Healthcare domain experience and knowledge of healthcare finance and operations
  • Epic Clarity database knowledge a plus.
  • Experience generating datasets for predictive analytics.
  • Developer experience in Azure Cloud Environment, particularly Azure Data Factory, Pipelines, Functions, DevOps
