We are hiring full-time Staff Nurses to support our Trauma/Burn and Emergency Medicine units!

 

UPMC Mercy is Western Pennsylvania’s only hospital with a combined Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and Comprehensive Burn Center under one roof. We have a wide variety of opportunities in our trauma/emergency services division for nurses to problem-solve and develop their critical thinking skills. Nurses that start on 11E Ortho/Trauma have a seamless transition into our Trauma Burn Center when the time is right. Likewise, nurses that orient in our Clinical Decision Unit and Emergency Referral Center are better prepared to dive into the fast-paced atmosphere of our Emergency Department. 

  • 11E Ortho/Trauma Burn: A 39-bed post-surgical ortho/trauma/burn unit. Our area is mapped into four modules including a large physical therapy and shower room. You will gain experience with orthopedic traction, trauma and burn patients.

  • Trauma Burn Center: A 9-bed intensive care unit designed to care for burn patients of all ages (including infants) as well as patients with traumatic injuries including, but not limited to, falls, gunshot wounds, stabbings, assaults, motor vehicle accidents, and/or industrial accidents. Our trauma patients are typically adults, however we do occasionally treat pediatric traumas. We have a 3-bay hydrotherapy center on the unit to provide water debridement to burn patients in addition to a treatment room for smaller hand/foot/facial injuries.

  • Clinical Decision Unit: The Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) admits patients from the Emergency Department for 23-hour observation. Our nurses utilize exceptional communication skills to expedite testing and obtain results, as well as consult with the emergency medicine physician; working in the CDU requires quick critical thinking to ensure proper patient disposition.

  • Emergency Referral Center: The Evaluation and Referral Center (ERC) is an extension of our Emergency Department. The ERC is a locked unit, which provides a safe environment for patients seeking treatment for acute and/or chronic behavioral health or substance abuse disorders. All patients are evaluated by our skilled clinicians to determine the appropriate level of care needed to address the patient’s present clinical crisis. Once disposition is determined, our staff facilitates admission, transfer, or discharge in collaboration with Emergency Department staff. 

  • Emergency Department: A 36-bed Level I trauma and burn center, as well as a primary cardiac and comprehensive stroke center, providing emergency care to over 68,000 people annually. The DEM handles critically ill or injured patients with minor or complex medical-surgical needs. We also see a significant amount of psychiatric cases and individuals seeking drug and alcohol services.

The Staff Nurse provides highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. A role that requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and candid partnership, the Staff Nurse establishes relationships with physicians, other care providers, patients, and patients’ families in order to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience. Six months experience is required for Professional Staff Nurses; Graduate Nurses may be hired at the Staff Nurse level until required experience is obtained (minimum salary for GNs is $27.14/hour) GNs must be eligible for State Board Licensure.

Qualifications

  • Zero to one year of experience.

  • Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.   • Completion of UPMC student nurse internship or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred

  • BSN preferred.

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.

  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

  • Good clinical judgment.

  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.

  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.

  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Must complete licensure examination within FOUR MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 4 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) 

  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP) 

  • Act 34 

  • Act 31, Act 33 and Act 73 (dependent on unit)
