Recreation Therapist I (Western Psychiatric Hospital)

Description

The Creative and Expressive Arts Therapies (CEAT) department at Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPH) includes Art, Dance/Movement, Music, Recreation, and Yoga therapies. Including this position, we are a team of 8 therapists serving all the inpatient units in the hospital. The CEAT department was first formed in the early 1980s and has played an important role in patient care throughout its tenure. As a team we provide on-unit interventions as well as some off-unit or multi-unit initiatives. The Recreation Therapist I develops and implements recreation therapy interventions to support behavioral health patients and to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities:

  • Order and maintain supplies and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively both in writing and verbally (patient assessments, progress notes, etc.
  • Promote patient satisfaction by offering a recreational therapy program of groups based on the social, cognitive, leisure and spiritual needs of the patients served.
  • Evaluate all patients and establish appropriate goals and programs focused on the patient's needs.
  • Conduct group and individual sessions.
  • Maintain certification requirements.
  • Abide by Hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Consults with other disciplines regarding patients' needs.
  • Organize and implement group and 1:1 interventions.
  • Conduct individual and/or group therapy sessions effectively employing principles and foundations of Recreation Therapy.
  • Document in the Medical Record according to established guidelines including assessments and treatment progress notes. Document training and supervision activities according to established guidelines.
  • Facilitate Recreation Therapy specialty training/orientation activities as requested by Supervisor.
  • Supervise Recreation Therapy students with oversight/support from senior staff and/or Supervisor.
  • Attend department meetings regularly and interdisciplinary meetings and other activities as needed. Attend 1-3 unit based or institute wide in-services/trainings yearly.
  • Adhere to hospital guidelines related to quality and safety. Request and care for supplies responsibly and appropriately with consideration for the safety of the patient population(s). Monitor for safe and responsible use of supplies.
  • Maintain professional certification/licensure as per CEU requirements.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with department and patient units.
  • Perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field required.
  • One year of clinical experience preferred.
  • Mental health experience preferred.
  • Experience with creating and implementing community integration outings preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
  • CTRS certification required
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
