COVID-19 Vaccination Information

Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

If you are not yet vaccinated, we urge you to get a vaccine now. You can schedule your COVID-19 vaccination through UPMC or visit a non-UPMC provider or UPMC Urgent Care location.

Proof of vaccination is not required upon hire; however, employees will be responsible for ensuring post-hire compliance by getting vaccinated or requesting a medical or religious exemption.

Located in downtown Pittsburgh, UPMC Mercy is an urban facility full of opportunities for nurses looking to take the next step in their career!

We are hiring full-time Staff Nurses to support our Neuro Progressive Care units and Medical ICU department!

If your long-term goal is to become a critical care nurse, 10E Progressive Care and 7F Neuro Trauma are great units to build a strong foundation. Working on 10E Progressive Care allows nurses to really hone in on their skills while working in a fast-paced environment. Our 7F Neuro Trauma unit serves as a good introduction to critical care because it consists of both progressive care as well as the Neuro Stepdown unit. Gaining experience on any of these floors better prepares nurses for the transition to our 8A Medical ICU!

  • 10E Progressive Care: A 40-bed, fast-paced medical teaching unit. As a “progressive care” unit, 10E provides care to patients of varying acuity and has the ability to monitor patients’ cardiac status remotely. Our staff sees a patient population requiring medical treatment for a wide variety of issues including neuro, pulmonary, cardiac, endocrine, geriatric, substance abuse and behavioral health.

  • 7F Neuro/Trauma: A 24-bed specialty unit comprised of a 19-bed progressive care area and a 5-bed Neuro Stepdown Unit (NSDU). 7F primarily cares for stroke, neurosurgical patients, and trauma patients with injuries involving the head, neck, or spine. Mercy is a recognized Level 1 Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. RNs are assigned to progressive care or the NSDU by shift, and are expected to float between the two areas.

  • 8A Medical ICU: A 18 bed critical care unit that serves a wide variety of patients, including the neurological, neurosurgical, trauma, medical, and surgical population. Nurses receive training to care for critical care, stroke and trauma patients, with certifications in BLS, ACLS, and ENLS. Advanced skills utilized include the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale assessment, hemodynamic monitoring, IV insertion, and phlebotomy. Many procedures and interventions are performed at the bedside, including insertion and maintenance of external ventricular drains, endotracheal tubes, tracheostomies, chest tubes, central lines, continuous renal replacement therapy, prone therapy, and induced hypothermia. Critical care physicians, nurses, patient care technicians, case management, social work, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists work collaboratively as the ICU care team to ensure the best care for the patient. MICU RNs also respond to Condition A and C emergencies in the hospital as part of the Rapid Response Team.

The Staff Nurse provides highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. A role that requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and candid partnership, the Staff Nurse establishes relationships with physicians, other care providers, patients, and patients’ families in order to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.
