UPMC Mercy is looking for full-time Staff Nurses to support its Advanced Speciality Rehab departments, which includes 6E/6F Brain Injury/Stroke, 7A General Rehab and 7E Spinal Cord Injury!

Sign-On Bonus Details:

Rehab Bonus
$5,000 for registered nurses or graduate nurses with less than two years of experience
 $10,000 for registered nurses with two or more years of experience

Experienced Nurse Bonus
$15,000 for registered nurses with one or more years of experience

 

Candidates hired into a sign-on bonus eligible role will be asked to make a two-year work commitment.

 

UPMC Mercy Rehabilitation Institute is one of the leading rehabilitation programs in the United States as well as a dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Center as accredited by the Joint Commission. Our patients have access to state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive services to assist with recovery. Our neuro/trauma inpatient rehabilitation departments provide an opportunity to build connections with patients and families as we foster a healing environment.

  • 6E Brain Injury: An 18-bed unit where each patient receives both an individualized and multidisciplinary approach to brain injury care. Brain injury can lead to physical disabilities, as well as long-term problems with thinking, memory, behavior and social interactions. Our staff is specifically trained to focus on the patient’s impairments, functional limitations, and participation restrictions, to guide them to the next stage of recovery. Our team is specially trained in treating patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). The DOC program is for patients with severe traumatic or non-traumatic brain injuries who present to our program in a minimally conscious state.

 

  • 6F Stroke: A 24-bed unit where each patient receives both an individualized and multidisciplinary approach to stroke care. Patients arrive to the unit debilitated from long hospitalization or injuries and at the end of their stay, they have learned skills to help them be as independent as possible. Our team is responsible for administering blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, IV fluids, feeding tubes, trach care and bowel and bladder training.

 

  • 7A General Rehab: A 14-bed general rehabilitation unit, our integrated rehabilitation team identifies the patient’s priorities and creates a customized, comprehensive treatment plan focused on healing and helping the patient regain independence after orthopedic surgery.  

 

  • 7E Spinal Cord Injury: A 20-bed spinal cord injury unit that works exclusively with spinal cord injury patients and their families to create customized, comprehensive treatment plans that meet the patient’s individual priorities and needs. Our program is one of only 14 in the United States designated as a spinal cord injury model system by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research; because we are a nationally designated center of excellence in spinal cord care, we are often involved in research studies and a test site for the latest treatments. 



6E/6F, 7A and 7E work together with an interdisciplinary team that includes:

  • Rehabilitation nurses who manage various aspects of the patients' care and education

  • Physiatrist who oversees rehabilitation techniques, medical management and methods of treating and preventing impairment in conjunction with UPMC Mercy

  • Physical therapists who focus on restoring movement and function

  • Occupational therapists who work with the patients on recovering skills needed for everyday living

  • Speech language pathologists who work with communication, swallowing, and cognition

  • Case Managers who help direct each patient's plan of care

  • Neuropsychologists who help treat a patient's memory, thinking, and concentration

 

The Staff Nurse provides highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. A role that requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and candid partnership, the Staff Nurse establishes relationships with physicians, other care providers, patients, and patients’ families in order to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience. Six months experience is required for Professional Staff Nurses; Graduate Nurses may be hired at the Staff Nurse level until required experience is obtained (minimum salary for GNs is $27.14/hour) GNs must be eligible for State Board Licensure.

Qualifications

  • Zero to one year of experience. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience. Six months experience is required for Professional Staff Nurses; Graduate Nurses may be hired at the Staff Nurse level until required experience is obtained (minimum salary for GNs is $27.14/hour) GNs must be eligible for State Board Licensure.

  • Completion of UPMC student nurse internship or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred

  • BSN preferred.

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.

  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

  • Good clinical judgment.

  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.

  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.

  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Must complete licensure examination within FOUR MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 4 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) 

  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
