Are you interested in being part of a new initiative within the clinical world at UPMC? The System Nursing Resources (SNR) team, part of UPMC Corporate Services, is actively seeking Operating Room Surgical Technologists interested in joining our newly created UPMC Pinnacle SWAT Surg Tech Team. 


The SWAT OR Surgical Technologist receives full-time benefits as well as increased compensation @ $31.50/hr (with an additional $1.60 an hour in shift differential) to reward flexibility. While on assignments in our many UPMC facilities, our Surgical Technologists gain rare, impressive, and highly desirable professional experiences and build widely varied skill sets.


The SWAT Surgical Technologist will be utilized to fill shifts in the areas of high need. They must be willing to work at all UPMC Pinnacle facilities (UPMC Carlisle; UPMC Hanover; UPMC Lititz; UPMC Memorial in York; UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg; UPMC Pinnacle Community Osteopathic Campus in Harrisburg; UPMC Pinnacle West Shore in Mechanicsburg) and accept regular rotational assignments as determined by the SWAT team leadership. All hospitals on our Pinnacle campus are within 50 miles of Harrisburg, PA.


The SWAT OR Surgical Technologist has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of OR surgical technology, under the general supervision of a registered nurse. The SWAT OR Surgical Technologist will assist the surgical team and work on complex surgical assignments. The SWAT OR Surgical Technologist, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies competent clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality care outcomes.


The SWAT OR Surgical Technologist will not be required to be on call, otherwise chosen by the participant and approved by the Unit Director and SWAT team supervisor. Off shift coverage may be required in facilities that have extended need for shift coverage. No overnight shifts required.



  • 0-1 years of experience: 2-year commitment $5,000; 3-year commitment $7,000
  • 1-2 years of experience: 2-year commitment $7,000; 3-year commitment $10,000
  • 3+ years of experience: 2-year commitment $10,000; 3-year commitment $15,000


  • Constructively receive feedback and direction Identify and communicates learning needs to appropriate manager. Serve as a resource for staff and other disciplines. Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs. Prior to performing new or challenging skills, requests assistance and reviews relevant policies and procedures.
  • Establish appropriate, assertive and professional communication strategies. Strengthen interdisciplinary relationships with members of the health care team. Coordinate interdepartmental activities to expedite care.
  • Function independently with one day orientation, unless otherwise specified. Maintain critical thinking skills, analytical and problem solving abilities as related to various aspects of patient care. Cultivate professional relationships and communication in the clinical environment.
  • Maintain critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of surgical technology.
  • Count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments according to policy
  • Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
  • After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room.  Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.  Perform work in a timely and productive manner
  • Must be able to function in two specialty areas of surgical services. Communicate educational needs when necessary. Maintain contact availability for schedule changes when needed. Must be flexible in scheduling to the requirements of the unit assigned.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Preparation of operating room prior to operational services by preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment.  Adjust and check equipment to ensure functionality.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites.
  • Assist in transfer of patients to the operating room and on and off surgical table, help position them on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
  • During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants.  Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
  • Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.





  • Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.
  • Minimum of 2 years of current surgical technician experience (ambulatory surgery center experience is excluded) that demonstrates advanced knowledge of at least 2 surgical specialties. 
  • SWAT OR Surgical Technologist must agree to be available to work 72 hours in a bi-weekly pay period and will follow the scheduling requirements of the operating room department assigned. 
  • Functions independently in two specialty areas of surgical services.
  • Must be able to independently scrub for major general, major vascular and orthopedic surgeries. The ability to scrub in any specialty is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
