UPMC is seeking a Manager, Media Relations role based Harrisburg, PA.  In this role, the successful candidate will manage media relations for UPMC in Central Pennsylvania.

  • Create, execute, and evaluate media relations strategies for UPMC in central Pennsylvania.
  • Write effective and engaging press releases, media statements, pitches, op-eds, speeches, talking points, and blog posts.
  • Stay informed of the competitive regional health care landscape to assist regional PR director in strategic planning and initiatives that align with organizational goals.
  • Facilitate media interviews between UPMC experts and regional, national, and international media.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, credible relationships with reporters, editors, producers, and members of the media.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital leadership to promote new services and procedures, clinical excellence, and patient stories.
  • Monitor and track media coverage and contribute to daily and weekly media reports.
  • Plan and implement media events.
  • Manage media during crises and serve as public information officer.
  • Coordinate with pertinent scientific and professional organizations to promote assigned areas.
  • Seek professional development opportunities.


  • Undergraduate degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, English, or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 5 + years of experience in media relations, journalism, or communications required.
  • Experience providing clients with strategic counsel.
  • Experience in an academic medical center, hospital, or health care industry is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to translate scientific/medical information to a lay person's understanding.
  • Sound news judgment and track record of identifying and promoting stories of interest to regional, national, and international media.
