The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

The purpose of this position is to provide senior level Environmental Health & Safety services to the served UPMC North Central PA institutions and other facilities as assigned.



  • Support Safety Specialists job duties including: Industrial Hygiene support, Hazardous Materials and Wastes, Regulatory Compliance, Response to emergency situations and staff complaints, Completion of facility inspections as appropriate, and Life Safety compliance support
  • May serve as primary EHS representative for one or multiple facilities.
  • May serve as a primary interface with select regulatory agencies and participate in regulatory reviews.
  • Maintain compliance documentation as appropriate.
  • Provides oversight of selected department compliance programs across covered business units as appropriate. Identify minimum compliance requirements and conduct gap analysis at served institutions. Establish minimum ongoing compliance requirements for selected programs.
  • Develop and implement standardized compliance training programs across served institutions.
  • Interface with other department leaders to educate and coordinate program implementation.
  • Mentor Safety Specialists and new department staff as needed.
  • Represent the department at the absence of the managers or director as needed.
  • Required to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of the organization.
  • Must be able to operate with minimal supervision and, at times, direct the work of others.



Completion of a collegiate curriculum in at the Baccalaureate level required. Education in Safety Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or related field preferred. Five years work experience required. Prior Environmental Health and Safety related experience in a healthcare environment preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CHSP (Certified Healthcare Safety Professional), ASP (Associate Safety Professional , CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) CFI (Certified Fire Inspector) preferred.
