Purpose:


Do you have a passion for IT?  Under the direction of management and more senior members of the team, UPMC's Enterprise Infrastructure Technology department is hiring a Systems Engineer – Senior. This position works Monday through Friday during daylight hours.  An on-call rotation is required every few weeks.

This position will be part of the Unix Support team, responsible for provisioning and support of UPMC’s IBM AIX and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and other Linux solutions.  The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience on AIX or Linux systems. The Senior team member will be further responsible for leading projects, providing end user support, contribute to team documentation, and seeks out process improvement. They will be responsible for managing POCs and evaluating new technologies and will acts as a liaison to vendors for advanced troubleshooting. The Systems Engineer - Senior will act as a mentor to junior members of the team.

This is a remote position.

Responsibilities:

  • Interactions with Others - Successfully completes projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. Works in collaboration with team and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts. Shows the ability to adjust and be flexible to change by adapting approach when necessary. Mentors less experienced staff.
  • Core Technology Concepts - Responsible for understanding of complex technologies and their use. Demonstrates initiative to learn about current and future technologies.
  • Troubleshooting/Critical Thinking - Independently resolve issues. Offer input on issue resolution and mentor less experienced staff with issue resolution.
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects.
  • Project Management - Complete assigned project-related tasks with independently. Responsible for time tracking and updating documentation. Lead small to medium sized projects. Collaborate with other technical teams, as appropriate, for successful completion of project. Participate in POC evaluations.
  • Self-Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, trainings, partnering with more senior members of team, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from senior team members for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • End user support - Resolve complex end-user support issues independently. Responsible for assisting less experienced staff with end-user support issues. Responsible for ensuring there is resolution or that the end-user is connected with the appropriate resources for issues resolution.
  • Maintenance/Upgrades - Develops maintenance/upgrade plans with assistance of lead/expert. Responsible for maintenance and upgrades. Responsible for assisting with Disaster Recovery Plan

 

Qualifications

  • Typically has 5+ years' experience with complex systems environments through education or practical experience.

  • Mastery of standards IT procedures and protocols.

  • Shows the ability to lead junior team members with enforcing compliance of procedures and protocols.

  • This position may be required to maintain a 24/7 off hours support as part of a rotation within the team. The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues in the rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge (5+ years) of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and/or IBM AIX

  • Red Hat or other relevant certifications a plus

  • Strong working knowledge of IT best practices, including change control management

  • Experience with AIX or Linux servers in a virtualized environment

  • Additional experience related to other operating systems Ubuntu, Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE a plus

  • Significant experience with scripting, including Bash, Python, Ruby, Perl

  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite 6 a plus

  • Experience with Red Hat Insights, IBM NIM, PowerVC is a plus

  • Knowledge about configuration management tools, such as Puppet, Ansible, etc.

  • Familiarity with SELinux, load balancing, firewalls, DNS, etc.

  • Good understanding of systems integration to design systems meeting needs of the enterprise

  • Supports our servers through the life-cycle:  Provisioning, Supporting, Updating, Patching, and Retirement of servers.

  • Excellent troubleshooting, critical thinking skills and strong technical learning aptitude is a plus

  • Strong team player capable of working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
