Our UPMC Corporate Quality team is hiring a Clinical Documentation Improvement Educator to join the department!  This position primarily works daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some remote work flexibility.  Occassional local travel is required for the role.

In this role, the CDI Educator is responsible for collaborating with program leadership to plan, develop, and implement clinical documentation educational programs for CDI providers and staff. This position is located within the Wolff Center at UPMC and will report to the Sr. Manager Quality/Clinical Documentation. The CDI educator will work collaboratively with other system-level departments including but not limited to coding, finance, electronic medical record teams, and physician providers while keeping a high degree of emphasis on physician engagement. The CDI educator will work closely with the Medical Director of Clinical Documentation and will collaborate with other stakeholders to identified areas for improvement, areas of opportunity, and areas of potential risk.

  • Collaborate with program leadership to plan, develop, and implement specialty based clinical documentation educational programs for providers. Analyze data to determine educational needs for the system
  • Promotes efforts to improve clinical documentation and provide an accurate clinical picture of the patient including severity of illness, risk and resource utilization. Conduct individual and large group educational sessions for providers.
  • Communicates and rounds with interdisciplinary team to establish professional rapport and support clinical documentation practices as indicated. Collaborates with Physicians and clinical leaders as an internal expert consultant to identify and implement improvements and standardization of documentation.
  • Advocates for and facilitates the best practice model for CDI Quality, linking the capture of documented bedside care to the most accurate administrative data reporting codes and acuity capture. Work Closely with CDI specialists to identify areas of non-specific documentation and improve documentation templates within the EMR if indicated.
  • Express self in a confident manner in individual and group settings. Shares content with system-wide regional and/or facility educational programs including presentations, program updates, etc.
  • Role models professional communication and encourages free exchange of ideas that serves as a catalyst for transformation. Acts as a change agent to design, facilitate, monitor and evaluate program improvement initiatives.
  • Assist the Sr. Manager and data analyst with the preparation of data and reports to evaluate the effectiveness and overall impact of the clinical documentation improvement program for presentation to the appropriate oversight steering committee.
  • Provide service to all customers and aspects of the organization related to the clinical documentation activities while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures.



  • BSN or Bachelor's degree in related field preferred
  • Five years of previous acute care clinical nursing is required
  • Three years previous experience as a clinical documentation improvement specialist is preferred
  • Excellent communications skills and professional demeanor are required

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34
  • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) certification strongly preferred, CCDS certification will be required within two years of employment
  • Certified Registered Nurse or Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practitioner
  • Completion of Health Record Administration Program (RHIA or RHIT) a plus
