The Patient Care Technician- Senior is a valued step in the UPMC Inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and patient care experience.

 

ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is hiring a full time Patient Care Technician - Senior to help support the Resource Pool at your McCandless Location.

 

The primary role of this position will be to support our inpatient phlebotomy team and Cardiac Monitor Center, Covid swabbing, EKGs, and supporting the RIC RN’s in high needs area’s with patient care support.

Patient Care Technicians - Seniors are essential partners in that mission, enhancing the patient experience at UPMC with positivity and integrity. Nursing support staff give personal care to patients with an emphasis on dignity and respect, striving to make each patient feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. Patient Care Technicians also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the floor by completing important skilled tasks such as checking vital signs and glucose levels, performing EKGs and blood draws, and much more. 

About the Unit:  The Resource Pool provides support to the nursing units to ensure adequate staffing.  The department is made up of full, time, part time, and casual nurses, nursing assistants, patient care technicians, and care attendants. The staff are designated to either support the Medical, Surgical, Progressive Care, and Inpatient Rehab areas related to experience as we try to supplement unit-based staff related to census surge, vacant positions, and other daily needs.

Shifts/Hours: Complement of 8 and 12 hour shifts, all nights. Eligible participants will receive an additional $2 per hour night program differential, on top of the hospital's current off-shift differential, for hours worked as part of the night program.

 

Purpose:

  • Support inpatient phlebotomy, act as a support to the cardiac monitoring center and RIC RN’s.
  • Provides routine patient care and supports the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the nurse or physician to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can always be maintained.
  • Completes advanced patient care duties after successfully completing training and annual competencies.
  • The Advanced Patent Care Technician must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND has the employee successfully completed basic arrhythmia class AND performs at least 4 of the following hospital identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal, femoral hemostasis, or IV insertion.

  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
  • Transports cardiac monitored patients within the hospital setting.
  • May insert foley catheters and perform straight catheterization as instructed by RN.
  • May perform IV insertion, removal and dressing change.
  • Completes department clerical functions as needed.
  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND has the employee successfully completed Basic arrhythmia class AND does the employee perform at least 4 of the following hospital identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal, femoral hemostasis, or IV insertion.2. Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. 3. Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.4. Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Establishes appropriate and effective communication with other departments.
  • Establishes professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.
  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence and impairment in the health professions.
  • Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.

Qualifications

Educational/Knowledge Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must also have either
    •  2 years of healthcare experience, OR
    • 1 year of experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, or
    • 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire
  • Successful completion of patient care technician senior class
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required.
  • May, in the course of their duties, be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients. Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

Licensure/Certification/Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
