Description

UPMC System Nursing Resources (SNR) group is currently seeking a caring and compassionate Patient Care Technician to work on a casual basis within our central float pool. The casual/per-diem staff supports short term scheduling needs at various UPMC hospital facilities.


As a large health system where many departments operate on a 24/7 basis, we have staffing needs for almost every day and every shift. Our opportunities are driven by the scheduling needs of our facilities which means you can often work where you want, when you want. Our casual PCTs are required to work at least 24 hours in a six week time period.

The System Nursing Resources PCT provides routine patient care and support services for various business units within the UPMC system in accordance with established UPMC and System Nursing Resource (SNR) policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the nurse or physician (provider), to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times. The SNR Patient Care Technician will be required to work at various UPMC business units as per the SNR departmental scheduling guidelines to support the day to day changing patient care staffing needs by business unit.


Responsibilities:

  • Care Delivery: Provide direct patient care as directed by the RN including all activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting and ambulating patients. Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care delivery including, but not limited to, performing messenger functions, ordering, charging/crediting supplies, setting up patient care equipment within the scope of the nursing assistant position and stocking patient rooms and unit supply areas. Deliver patient nourishments, fill water pitchers and distribute patient mail. Perform routine tests such as blood glucose monitoring, patient weights, vital signs and l &O. May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol. Provide diversion activities to reduce or prevent use of restraints Respond within the scope of the nursing assistant role to emergent situations. Provide one on one constant observation with patients as required.
  • Collaborative Practice: Assure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department. Establish appropriate and effective communication strategies. Establish professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. Contribute to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.
  • Communication: Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status. Document in the medical record according to established procedures. Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Professional Growth: Constructively receive feedback and direction. Identify and communicate learning needs to the manager/unit director. Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance. Request assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed. Participate in self-review as requested by the manager/unit director. Maintain current CPR certification at Heart Saver level.
  • Safety: Maintain an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery including, but not limited to, completing safety checks, keeping the department and patient rooms clean and organized, cleaning department specific equipment, changing bed linens, emptying linen hampers, keeping hallways clear of equipment and returning equipment. Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions and understand policies and procedures for blood borne pathogen exposure.
  • Transformational Leadership: Suggest and support changes within the department. Assume responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges. Demonstrate awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department. Supports department based projects and quality initiatives.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of recent hospital or skilled nursing clinical experience, OR successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class, OR successful completion of the first year of clinical work in a nursing student program.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation OR Basic Life Support within 30 days of beginning employment
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • OAPSA
