Reference Lab Technician

Description

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a full-time Reference Lab Technician to support the Reference Lab team!  This is a daylight role with varied start times 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Monday thru Friday.  No weekends or holidays!

Purpose:
This position has the responsibility and accountability for the accurate receiving, sorting, identifying, processing and distribution of laboratory specimens to reference laboratories for testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Sort and package specimens for sending to the reference lab.
  • Forward all PUH and CHP reports on outpatients to LSS staff for manual mailing to the ordering physician.
  • Ensure that there is proper sample volume. If not, find additional specimen prior to referring out.
  • Manage the referral lab certificates on a regular basis and has the referral labs send an updated certificate when their present one has expired.
  • Prepare packing lists or complete referral lab requisitions.
  • Fax report back to the physician.
  • Gather all specimens for send out to referral lab from the Processing Area refrigerator and freezer and also from the Reference lab refrigerator and freezer. Also collect any Special Hematology or Molecular specimens to be referred out.
  • Enter patient results into Misys.
  • File reports in the appropriate hanging folders.
  • Complete patient registration for each specimen.
  • Prepare and verify fax numbers to which patient reports will be forwarded.
  • Label all specimen packages with the appropriate tagging indicating the specimens are contained in the package. Also note if specimens are packed using dry ice.
  • Process all CCSEND reports in the same manner as the other reports of the report except that these test results cannot be reported into the lab computer since there is no Misys Order Code. So, these results are placed into a pocket folder with the test name.
  • Process reports when faxed to the lab. Separate reports and forwards to the appropriate Medical Records department, including PUH Medical Records and CHP Medical Records.

 

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in a health related field and/or business plus 1 year experience in a medical environment;
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience (High School and 2 years related experience).
  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology and computer systems.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34
