Description

UPMC Shadyside is currently hiring a full-time Professional Staff Nurse to support the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit (PACU)! In our 28-bed Level I PACU, you will care for outpatients, inpatients, and critical care patients postoperatively. We see between 40 to 60 cases per day and boast a fast-paced environment with opportunities to learn about many different types of surgical patients. We are a cohesive team that works well together, and we are proud of the culture we have created in our unit! 

In this role, you will work Monday-Friday (40 hours per week) with daylight weekend calls (about fifteen call shifts/year) and one-holiday call per year. Shifts are staggered to accommodate the OR schedule, starting at 5 am; the PACU closes at 11:30 pm. You will not be required to work night shifts!

The Professional Staff Nurse is a valued step in the UPMC nursing career ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement; salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.  Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder based on their individual experience and education.

 

Responsibilities

  • Apply the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patients that involves the patient as a partner and considers the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues for the patient within an episode of care.
  • Articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.
  • Create a caring and compassionate patient-focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Incorporate national professional organization as well as business unit and health system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Minimum six months experience required, 1-year nursing experience STRONGLY preferred.
  • Nursing experience in an adult ICU, ER, or Level I PACU setting preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in the application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
  • ACLS required within 1 year
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 34
