Description

Purpose:
Performs pulmonary function tests as ordered by physicians in order to assist in the diagnosis of respiratory diseases. Performs technical and service duties necessary for the proper and continuing readiness of the Lab.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assists physicians during bronchoscopy procedures including diagnostic procedures, Navigational Bronchoscopy, Endobroncial Ultrasound, Stent and Pulmonary Valve insertion; Proficient in bronchoscope cleaning and reprocessing.
  • Performs pulmonary function tests and diagnostic procedures on geriatric, adult, adolescent and pediatric patients according to department policy and procedure. Explains procedures to patients, families, and prepares patients for the test.
  • Provides for and maintains professional growth, orients/precepts, attends and may teach classes.
  • Reviews test results to insure accuracy.
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment according to established guidelines.
  • Operates and monitors pulmonary function equipment, making adjustments and calibrations as needed.
  • Obtain and demonstrate extreme accuracy while preparing and sending specimens for pathological, microbiological and cytological studies.
  • Demonstrates and applies an understanding of pulmonary and thoracic principles, techniques and instrumentation as related to age specific population to include Pediatric, Adult and Geriatric. Able to solve problems, make appropriate decisions and communicate with the medical staff and other health care workers concerns of patient assessment and pulmonary diagnostic testing.
  • Participate in department and organizational Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure routine maintenance, quality control and perform calibration on Pulmonary Diagnostic testing equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of supplies utilized by Pulmonary Function and bronchoscopy suite procedures

Qualifications

Graduate of a Co ARC (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) approved Respiratory program required Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation required Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) required prior to expiration of temporary practice permit Respiratory therapists who receive their CRT credential from the NBRC after July 1, 2002 are required to maintain certification under the NBRC requirements.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist preferred. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

Clearances must be dated within 90 days.
