Patient Care Technician -- Day of Admission (Flex Full Time)

Description

UPMC Shadyside is hiring a flex full time PCT to support our Day of Admission department. UPMC Shadyside’s Day of Admission Surgery department cares for all types of surgical patients before scheduled surgical procedures as well as post-operative patients going home the same day after their scheduled surgeries. We see between 40 to 60 cases per day. We boast a fast-paced environment with opportunities to learn about many different types of surgical patients. As a flex full time employee, you will work between 28-40 hours per week depending on department needs. Regardless of the number of hours you work, you will always receive full time benefits! In this role, you will work daylight hours with no nights or holidays and limited weekends.

Experienced applicants may be hired at the Patient Care Technician level; those without prior inpatient hospital experience will be required to complete a 7-day training course. (Note: the training course is held over 7 consecutive weekdays during daylight hours.) Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder based on their individual experience and education.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care) AND at least four of the following business unit identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter or IV catheter removal.
  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have either:
    • 1 year of similar experience
    • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation 
    • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class post-hire. 
  • Successful completion of basic information system training post-hire.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
