UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is searching for a full-time Genetic Counselor I or II to join our laboratory team! This role will be scheduled for a daylight shift of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
The primary focus of this role is to provide genetic testing utilization management review for lab orders. This position will collaborate with the local medical genetics and genomic team, and national lab UM groups. In addition, the Genetic Counselor will provide genetic counseling services to patients/families 8 to 12 hours per week.
Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Genetic Counselor II’s salary starts at $36.46/hour.

Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates expanded knowledge of genetic testing availability and orders appropriately
- Participates in a genetics related outreach activity
- Submits an abstract (either poster or platform) for a professional medical society meeting
- Contributes to departmental/divisional educational materials
- Demonstrates understanding of research protocols
- Demonstrates competency with triaging patients for scheduling
- Completes all duties of a Genetic Counselor I
- Demonstrates proficiency with EMR; incorporates standardized notes for efficiency; completes EMR charting in a timely manner
- One presentation at GSPH Clinical Case Conference (Thursdays @ noon during academic year)
- If research focused position: Consents patients for research study; contributes to writing of IRB protocol, informed consent and other related documents; contributes to manuscripts
Qualifications
Genetic Counselor I:
- Master of Science in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited institution.
Genetic Counselor II:
- Master of Science in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC) accredited institution.
- 3 years of experience as a genetic counselor is required.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certified genetic counselor who holds a PA license.
- American Board of Genetic Counseling
- Certified Genetics Counselor
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
