Purpose:
Leads the clinical and administrative operations of Anesthesia Services. Directly interfaces with the on-call Anesthesiologist, surgeons, and campus Operating Room Supervisor. Provides anesthesia.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for rotating to all UPMC Susquehanna campuses and assigned departments as assigned to assure familiarity and maintain competency. Call required
  • Incorporate leading/evidence-based practice in quality/safety into every day work. Commit to high quality, safe work; encourage others to have similar standards. Identify processes/systems that could lead to inefficient practices, unsafe conditions, errors or adverse events. Avoid shortcuts to ensure quality and safety measures are not circumvented. Encourage patient and family involvement in processes involvingpatient safety. Speak up with other service partners to ensure high quality and safety. Report serious events/incidents per policy
  • Manages the anesthesia environment of care, ensuring a proper QA and safety of anesthesia machine, anesthesia work cart, and equipment
  • Develops and carries out an anesthetic care plan under the direction of the responsible attending anesthesiologist and such a plan includes selection and implementation of appropriate monitors, drugs, fluids, and anesthetic techniques
  • Manages emergency situations including initiating and participating in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Reviews with the responsible attending anesthesiologist the pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient and such evaluation may indicate the need for additional studies or consultation
  • Provides continuous vigilant observation of patients under the CRNA?s care, correcting abnormal patient responses and seeking consultation from the responsible attending anesthesiologist where appropriate.
  • Participates in the supervision of students and ancillary personnel and in educational programs
  • Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.

  • Ensures patient stability and safe transfer to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit
  • Leads the daily operations of the Anesthesia Department in collaboration with the Anesthesiologist on duty and the OR Supervisor including efficient utilization of manpower, supplies, and smooth running of the OR schedule including pro-active suggestions about the Operating Room schedule by noon of each day, streamlining cases and assignments to run the OR as efficiently as possible. Huddles daily OR Supervisor, Anesthesiologist, and Clinical Director regarding staffing, breaks and meal relief, and early- and late-starting rooms
  • Completes an accurate and timely anesthetic record for inclusion in the patient?s chart.

Qualifications

Bachelors of Nursing Required. Masters of Nurse Anesthesia Required. Masters of Nursing Preferred. 3 years of experience Required. Currently practicing in the field of anesthesia at time of application.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Pennsylvania Required. Certified as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist Required.

  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
