UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time Compliance Specialist to support Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation MWRIF!
This position will work daylight shifts. Hours are subject to change based on business needs. Flexible work schedule, including hybrid or remote arrangements possible!
This position will be a key component of MWRIF’s compliance team. The initial focus will be on financial compliance. Eventually, this role will help to ensure overall compliance for all of MWRIF including conflict of interest and research compliance.
Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation is the largest research entity in the US focused on the health of women and infants. This Compliance Specialist will report to the Compliance Manager and will assist with all compliance functions for the organization. This is a key position that requires the keen ability to understand laws, rules, and regulations and to provide recommendations for improvement when necessary. Prior experience with research grants or financial management of research funds is preferred. Strong interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).
The Compliance Specialist, MWRIF supports compliance functions at Magee-Women's Research Institute and Foundation MWRIF. This position reviews various MWRIF policies and procedures for compliance with laws, regulations, statutes, and other applicable provisions and will make recommendations for change. As a research-institution and foundation, MWRIF operates in a highly-regulated environment and the Compliance Specialist, MWRIF plays a key role by ensuring full compliance in all areas of the organization including but not limited to the business office (finance, grants, accounting, purchasing), the foundation and fundraising areas, and research areas.
Responsibilities:
- Works closely with compliance staff and MWRIF colleagues to identify compliance issues and implement corrective actions. Assist with corrective/preventative actions and document revisions.
- Reviews regulations and MWRIF Policies and Procedures for existing and potential compliance issues.
- Responsible for the receipt, workflow, storage and retrieval of all inquiries relating to regulations and requirements in a timely manner. Ensures priority inquiry files are maintained in accordance with government requirements.
- Report on a weekly basis, status of all assignments, pertinent information obtaining during report week, and provide projections for upcoming week to direct supervisor.
- Presents researched information to staff, providing on-going educational updates; this presentation may be during the regularly scheduled staff meeting or during a meeting scheduled to present educational information.
- Research and assist with auditing MWRIF actions to identify areas of potential weakness and collaborate with colleagues to determine root cause and potential remedies.
- Evaluate system and/or operational issues throughout MWRIF and report any adverse or unfavorable conditions.
- Establishes knowledge of all regulatory requirements assigned to the Compliance Specialist, MWRIF and communicates pertinent findings to appropriate staff.
- Develops and manages relationships with colleagues in a professional, independent manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
Qualifications
- This position requires a Bachelors degree or equivalent.
- Three years of experience in research, research administration, academia, or other related experience are required.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to critically review regulations, contract provisions and policies and procedures is required.
- Identifies, develops and participates in process improvement opportunities within the compliance role.
- Must have good organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must also possess the ability to learn new software as needed.
- Grant funded experience & risk assessment preferred.
- Must be self-motivated, and capable of meeting stringent deadlines.
