Description
The D’Aiuto/Nimgaonkar Laboratory is part of the Program for Genetics and Psychosis at Western Psychiatric Hospital of UPMC. Our laboratory is high-energy environment that focuses on the modeling of viral infections in the central nervous system using induced pluripotent stem cells. We have a history of innovative and impactful research in the field of psychiatry, genetics and virology. The ideal candidate will become part of a nationally and internationally known and respected research team and can expect an exciting experience, both academically and technically. The Research Principal will be directly involved in stem cell biology, virology and molecular genetics. The Research Principal will provide advanced level research and administrative support to the study. They will also mentor, train, & assist with supervising junior research staff.
This position is grant funded.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the Laboratory in an organized manner
- Contribute intellectually and scientifically to the research process
- Maintain induced pluripotent stem cell cultures (iPSC)
- Differentiate iPSCs into different central nervous system cell types
- Perform viral infections of iPSC-derived neuronal cultures
- Perform tissue sections
- Perform immunohistochemisty analyses
- Perform RT qPCR
- Perform in situ hybridization
- Perform Western Blotting
- Perform DNA cloning
- Perform DNA extraction and DNA variant analyses
- Perform in silico analyses of public genomic and infectious disease databases
- Maintain proper records of all laboratory tests, including data entry into computerized data bases
- Obtain and/or transport human tissue when required, as part of the research
- Maintain inventory of chemicals and laboratory ware. Order fresh supplies as required
- Disposal of laboratory wastes, as required
- Perform statistical analyses
- Perform manuscript preparation and pursue publication of scientific correspondence
- Assist in preparation of grant applications
- Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Masters degree required preferably in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, or related research field.
- Minimum of two years of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical/laboratory setting is required.
- Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
- Working knowledge of research methodology required.
- Prior supervisory experience preferred.
