Description

UPMC is seeking a Manager, Public Relations. This role will strategize, implement and develop Media Relations and Internal Communication plans for audiences in assigned areas. This position needs to be accessible each week to UPMC Altoona and could be located at another UPMC location in the region, such as UPMC Bedford or UPMC Somerset. There is flexibility for partial remote work, the selected candidate must be on-site at a UPMC location two to three days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Represent the department as needed at various internal and external meetings/events.
  • Conceptualize, research, write and edit material for various hospital and system publications, channels, and informational pieces.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with representatives of various media outlets.
  • Coordinate interviews with hospital representatives and various media outlets.
  • Cover or coordinate coverage of hospital events for publication in internal and external media.
  • Conceive, develop, and deliver to a mass audience stories of public interest through various media outlets proactively via news releases or personal contact.
  • Coordinate photo shoots with contracted photographers for hospital publications and special projects. Use computer and desktop publishing to design brochures.
  • Manage the research, writing, design and production of materials.
  • Handle approvals and other client relations and take responsibility for accuracy and effectiveness of information communicated.
  • Prepare strategies to achieve communications goals.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in other departments.
  • Media Relations duties:
    • Appropriately prioritize beat areas for media coverage to meet organizational goals.
    • Coordinate with pertinent scientific and professional organizations to promote assigned areas.
    • Create, execute, and evaluate media strategies for assigned areas.
    • Cultivate and maintain strong, credible relationships with all appropriate regional, national and international media.
    • Manage media crises in assigned areas.
    • Seek professional development opportunities.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Internal Communications duties:
    • Develop and implement targeted communication strategies to support the organization's objectives.
    • Serve as a strategic communications counselor (consultant) to internal UPMC clients.
    • Implement communications plans for programs by managing multi-faceted locally targeted and systemwide projects.
    • Develop methods to evaluate communications projects based on effectiveness and cost/benefits, and document the results.
    • Adhere to all department processes as established for editing content, submitting to publications, supporting intranet governance and other processes as outlined by department leadership.
    • Edit and/or write copy appropriate for the audience and the channel publications, letters, advertisements, audio/visual presentations, speeches and other communication programs.
    • Independently advise internal clients.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, English, Health Sciences or related field required.  Master's degree preferred.
  • 5 + years of experience in media relations, journalism, communications or related field required.
  • Project management experience required.
  • Experience providing clients with strategic counsel required.
  • Experience in an academic medical center, hospital or health care industry is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills required.
  • Ability to translate scientific/medical information to a lay person's understanding.
  • Sound news judgment and track record of identifying and promoting stories of interest to regional, national and international media.
