Contracts Manager- Health Plan


UPMC Health Plan is seeking a Contracts Manager!
The Contracts Manager is responsible for overseeing all contract management activities for UPMC Health Plan. This role supports the critical contracting function of the Health Plan Legal department and the ongoing maintenance of legal contracts for all Health Plan business units. The Contracts Manager also provides research and support for the resolution of complex legal issues or questions in which contract documents, terms, or legal and regulatory standards may be implicated.

This is a Hybrid role in that half of the time the role would be a Contracts Manager with exposure to all of UPMC Health Plan and their contracts, and the other half of the position is given the opportunity to practice as an Attorney.



  • Perform other related duties in support of Legal and Health Plan business unit operations as requested by senior attorneys and key UPMC management personnel.
  • Provide assistance to UPMC attorneys through legal research, preparation of administrative law cases, and communication with governmental agencies and other oversight entities.
  • Coordinate engagement of Finance, Audit, Corporate Procurement, Compliance, and other key staff as necessary for vendor review and contract approval process.
  • Interface with Legal, senior management, and contract owners to ensure appropriate management and tracking of contracts, approvals, signatures, renewals, and documented performance guarantees.
  • Monitor and report on any gaps in contract administration and make recommendations to streamline contracting systems and processes, including through the development and maintenance of formal contract management policies and procedures in coordination with all stakeholders.
  • Review and interpret contract documents to capture and record appropriate data elements within contract management software.
  • Evaluate and prepare responses to third-party subpoenas, discovery requests, court orders, and other formal requests seeking protected health information and medical, personnel, and other business records.
  • Prepare administrative reports for Compliance, Audit, or other internal oversight and evaluation.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries or issues regarding all contracts and contracting processes for UPMC Health Plan business units.



  • Juris Doctorate required.
  • Must have the ability to problem-solve and make decisions independently within agreed parameters of attorney supervision and consistent with the professional rules of responsibility for the attorney practice of law.
  • Knowledge of Managed Care and experience in corporate vendor contracting is a plus.
