UPMC is hiring full-time Clinical Data Analyst for the UPP Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine Department working inside of a team of primarily three clinical data analysts and a project manager.  This team works closely with many members of the department, including Executive Leadership, Support positions for the department, Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers.  If you want to join a team that allows growth and flexibity, this could be your next career with the Life Changing Medicine team. Here are a few examples:  Ability to grow in terms of promotion to Senior level clinical data analyst, Negotiable Work from Home after orientation, and Negotiable hours as long as majority fall within typical business hours.

The Clinical Data Analyst Intermediate designs, analyzes and presents analytical solutions to multidisciplinary teams including but not limited to physicians, administrators and organizational leaders, summarizing population characteristics and outcomes to support data-based decision making throughout the organization to improve elements such as patient care, clinical outcomes and operational throughput. Reporting specifications to be provided by requesting audience, and subsequently discussed within interdepartmental team meetings. Various clinical and administrative systems will be used as the data sources, including but not limited to Epic, Cerner and Medipac. Final aggregation and presentation will be completed through various software packages, including SQL Developer, Qlik and Cognos. The Clinical Data Analyst, Intermediate must ensure reporting logic is accurate and sound by comparing analytical output to data within the source systems, as well as through cross validation to base reports under the direction of the Expert Clinical Data Analyst. The Clinical Data Analyst, SIntermediate must be able to work both independently as well as in a team setting.


  • Perform clinical analyses in a team oriented atmosphere and review the analytical outcomes to both clinical and non-clinical audiences
  • Identify trends in outcomes, utilization, medical quality and other areas.
  • Stay abreast on new solutions relevant to the department through various webinars and intermittent conferences requiring brief travel
  • Maintain high level of accuracy and timeliness.
  • Identify current /future data challenges, develop meaningful recommendations and provide timely updates on issues encountered.
  • Meet deadlines and turnaround times set by department (these deadlines and turnaround times will, at times, require the employee to work until the project is completed, meaning extended daily work hours, extended work weeks, or both).
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and ensures data accuracy.
  • Effectively prioritize and complete all assigned tasks.
  • Master new computer software programs and upgrades, as applicable.
  • Interact with various clinical and non-clinical teams throughout each project to ensure data definitions and assumptions are accurate
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with internal UPMC departments, and external contacts as appropriate
  • Assist in organizing and leading discussions with multi-disciplinary teams, including but not limited to: senior management, department/division chiefs, chairs, physicians, etc.
  • Exhibit advanced problem solving using various information sources.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Information Systems, Healthcare Management, or related field and two (2) years' experience OR high school and seven (7) years of experience.
  • MS Office proficiency required. SQL and Business Intelligence knowledge preferred
  • Healthcare experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills required
  • Must work well independently and within a team*Epic (UPMC Electronic Medical Record) training is mandatory within the first year of employment, requiring one week of travel to Madison, Wisconsin
