Description

The UPMC School of Surgical Technology is hiring a full time Surgical Technologist Educator to support our UPMC Passavant Campus. The UPMC School of Surgical Technology is a new Allied Health School that currently focuses on growing and developing entry level UPMC employees into clinical careers in the OR. We are preparing for accreditation which the educator will play a critical role in achieving. We are expanding our program to include a new location in the North Hills at our UPMC Passavant Hospital location. The Surgical Technology Educator will support the program by teaching our Surgical Technology curriculum to Surgical Technology Students and prepare them for entry into careers in the Operating Room. 

In this role, the Educator will work under the supervision of the Program Manager and work independently at the Passavant location. The candidate chosen for this role will complete training and onboarding at UPMC Presbyterian up until the opening of the Passavant Campus. The educator will collaborate with our program’s Clinical Coordinator and local leadership at UPMC Passavant. Occasional travel will be required to UPMC Presbyterian (less than 25%) after the opening of the Passavant location.

Responsibilities:

  • Has the authority, responsibility and accountability for delivery of surgical technology education. 
  • Teaches students in our training program in classroom and hands-on lab settings, ensuring that they gain the knowledge and skills that are required for entry-level employment.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and educational skills necessary to assess, plan and provide the educational programs that are required.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication. Extends trust by acknowledging the contributions of others; listens first, creates transparency in communications, confronts reality, and clarifies expectations. Conveys information and ideas clearly through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message. Perform related duties as required.
  • Utilize classroom and lab instruction, student assessment mechanisms, and classroom management techniques to provide an engaged classroom experience to students.
  • Ensure that each student has been presented with the material to successfully meet the learning objectives of each course within a student's program of study
  • Ensure that instructional materials and equipment are ready for student use, sufficient in quantity, are properly maintained and are in working order prior to class time
  • Actively participate in meetings, review and analyze assessment data, compile reports, and meet academic and administrative deadlines
  • Receive feedback and direction constructively. Serve as a formal and informal mentor for new staff members and mentor new preceptors to be successful in their role. Participate in department-based Performance Improvement projects. Participate in self-review. Improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental need. Demonstrate a high level of initiative, work independently, and establish priorities to meet department and organizational goals. Obtain and maintain appropriate certifications. Participate in professional and community organizations. Develops professional coaching and feedback skills.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the impact of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department and organization. Assume responsibility for complex assignments and view problems as challenges. Apply creative and innovative strategies in problem solving to achieve desired goals. Facilitates student experiences as appropriate.

 

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree required. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Educator must be a Certified Surgical Technologist OR Registered Nurse First Assist.
  • Relevant Teaching Experience- a minimum of 1 year precepting experience with experience teaching in a Surg Tech program preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of Surgical Technologist/Scrub experience required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • For RNs:
    • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse license
    • Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant
  • For Surg Techs:
    • CST, CSFA, or CST/CSFA
    • Certified Surgical First Assist
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
