Description

As the Clinical Engineering Program Director, you will perform repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance on all patient-related medical devices used throughout UPMC, hospital affiliates, and institutions contracting for services with BioTronics Inc. Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks and goals. Supervise, coordinate, provide leadership to and review the work of assigned staff. Evaluate and recommend changes in methods or procedures in assigned areas of responsibility. Act as a liaison between other departments, units or organizations that the Clinical Engineering Department provides services. This role will require travel throughout UPMC facilities including hospitals, surgery centers, cancer centers, and physician offices. This role will oversee the direct management responsibility of BioTronics BioMedical Field Service.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultation to administration, nursing, and medical staff regarding operational, training, application and technological advancements of medical instrumentation.
  • Participate actively in hospital and medical staff committee structure.
  • Direct productive and efficient operation of the Clinical Engineering Department.
  • Priority Class 'Low' Equipment includes but is not limited to: Lab equipment, physical therapy equipment, saws, dental equipment, compressors, and general patient care equipment, arthroscopy instruments, standard scissors, forceps, retractors, elevators, ortho curettes, osteotomes, chisels, bone cutters, printer and PC peripherals. Priority Class `Medium' Equipment includes but is not limited to: Patient monitoring systems, video equipment, warmers (blood and fluid), scope washers, lab equipment (analyzers), oximeters, infusion devices, diagnostic test equipment (pulmonary), NIBP units, humidifiers, oxygen equipment (respiratory), nerve/muscle stimulator, Doppler, computer work stations, pumps, tourniquets, SCD, hypothermia, EKG machines, ultrasound (PT), OR tables, OR lights and sonics, rongeurs, needle holders, general imaging/radiology equipment.
  • Participates in on-call rotation and scheduling as indicated by director.
  • Control and maintain the department monthly expenditures.
  • Assist Director in developing related operating and capital budget projections and assess impact of those projections on department's objectives.
  • Routinely perform preventive maintenance, inspection and repair of Low and Medium priority type medical equipment.
  • Travel between UPMC sites, hospital affiliates, and institutions for services with BioTronics Inc. is required as needed. Use of personal vehicle may be required.
  • Complete annual competency base performance evaluations of Clinical Engineering staff inclusive of BMET, Radiology, Sterilizer, IT/Networking and Surgical Instrument personnel.
  • With direct supervision, occasionally performs preventive maintenance, inspection and repairs of High priority type medical equipment.
  • Understand and implement specific regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in continuing education and the development of all Clinical Engineer staff within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Provide continued support of student internship program within Clinical Engineering.
  • Maintain records of all work activities in the Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Understand and operate all standard test equipment.
  • Drive savings through the reduction and monitoring of outside service contracts.
  • Provide hospital-wide in-service education programs and electrical safety and participate as an outside lecturer in Clinical Engineering.

 

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree and 7 years of experience, or Associate's degree and/or equivalent military experience and 10 years of experience.
  • Superior knowledge of electronics, digital circuitry operations, Information Technology, and surgical instrumentation (as applicable).
  • Superior knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, physics, chemistry, optics, pneumatics, hydraulics, hospital structure and regulatory requirements (as applicable).
  • Superior Computer skills as required to operate a Computerized Maintenance Management System and common office software including but not limited to MS Office.May in the course of duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with the medications is allowed.
