UPMC is actively hiring an Intermediate Software DevOps Engineer to support the Health Plan's Consumer Technology Team.
The primary role of the Software Engineer, Intermediate (DevOps CI/CD) is to create, maintain, and optimize the DevOps Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, automation, and deployment strategies for the UPMC Consumer Technology department. This individual will contribute to the automated CI/CD processes in support of the development, testing, and release of multiple web-based and mobile applications, microservices, and legacy software systems.
The role will require a broad background in computer science, foundational knowledge of IT infrastructure and software architecture, the application of programming/scripting languages, and an aptitude for continuous learning.

  • In support of department and leadership vision and roadmaps, create, maintain, and optimize DevOps Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, automation, and deployment strategies for on-premises and cloud-based software solutions
  • Triage and debug server environment or build-related issues; assist with root cause analysis and problem remediation
  • Identify opportunities to implement CI/CD tools and improve the efficiency of software delivery and release processes
  • Interactions with Others - Successfully completes projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. Works in collaboration with team and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts. Shows the ability to adjust and be flexible to change by adapting approach when necessary. Mentors less experienced staff.
  • Application Development Cycle - Show fundamental knowledge of application development cycle. Demonstrate an intermediate understanding of the application development cycle.
  • Documentation - Create basic technical documentation. Responsible for maintaining and validating current documentation.
  • Security - Show fundamental knowledge and follow secure coding processes and writing, accessing, and following established security protocols.
  • Quality - Follow established coding standards. Submit code for review and deliver quality, unit test code.
  • Integration - Responsible for components of integration within a module.
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day-to-day work and projects.
  • Troubleshooting - Independently resolve issues. Mentor associate-level staff with issue resolution.
  • Design - Follow established design patterns and has awareness of user experience standards. Responsible for individual components of design.
  • Project Management - Has ownership in the success of projects. Responsible for estimating and delivering on individual tasks within the project.
  • Provide off-hours support for software releases as needed
  • Create technical and procedural documentation for CI/CD processes
  • Maintains skillset and awareness of DevOps industry standards


  • Typically has 2+ years of related work experience.
  • Experience with complex development environments, taking abstract concepts and ideas and formulating a detailed software deliverable
  • Experience in developing on cross-functional systems
  • Deep knowledge of programming
  • Basic understanding of the SDLC
  • Highly driven and self-motivated to exceed expectations
  • Ability to work independently and in a team based environment
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Typically has 2+ years' experience in a Software Development, System Administration, or DevOps Engineering role.
  • Experience automating software deployment processes leveraging CI/CD pipelines and configuration management tools
  • Working knowledge or the aptitude to learn the following tools/technologies:
    • Microsoft Azure DevOps (formerly Visual Studio Team Services)
    • Microsoft Azure Pipelines, Task Groups, and YAML
    • Git repositories, branching strategies, and source code management
    • Task automation and Powershell scripting language
    • Microsoft Azure Cloud Services (Service Fabric, API Management)
    • Infrastructure as Code (Azure Resource Manager/ARM templates)
    • Container Orchestration (Azure Kubernetes, Helm, Docker)
    • Package management tools (NuGet, npm)
  • Demonstrates understanding of the Agile/SCRUM software development methodology

This is a remote position with workspace available in US Steel Tower (Pittsburgh, PA) if needed
