and patient care on the telemetry unit @ UPMC Northwest!
Telemetry Unit: 2 North is a 26 bed, very busy telemetry/stroke unit that sees an average daily census of 22 with a pretty brisk turnover of patients. This unit has a strong census, short length of stay and acts as our intermediate unit with cardiac medication infusions as well as all diagnoses. The unit is comprised of all RNs, two LPNs and nursing assistants/PCTs. The unit houses a centralized cardiac monitoring with a trained monitor tech on duty 24/7. This is a Primary Stroke Center designated by the Joint Commission.
All RNs/LPN are required to successfully complete a Basic Arrhythmia course, NIH certification and ACLS.
Shift: Typically Days with occassional off-shifts
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques.

- Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Applies nursing knowledge and skills within the framework of Relationship Based Care, using the nursing process to meet the clinical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient and family.
- Demonstrates critical thinking in the analysis of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care.
- Practices solid verbal and written communication skills and can articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices.
- Ensures patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.
- Identifies, educates, and supports the psychological and learning needs of staff during change and transition.
- Assumes formal leadership responsibilities for one or more of the following: quality improvement, evidence-based practice, GN or new hire on-boarding.
- Completes and/or assists with staff performance evaluations for direct reports as applicable.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of nursing experience
- BS/BSN required. (If BS degree not in nursing, a Master's or higher degree in Nursing is required)
- Masters degree preferred, not required.
- Demonstrated competence as a Professional Staff Nurse.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
- Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
- Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
- Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) withing 1 year of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) based upon AHA within 30 days
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) within 90 days of hire
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- National Certification preferred.
