Statistician | Center for Sleep and Circadian Science (CSCS)


The Center for Sleep and Circadian Science (CSCS) in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh has an immediate opening for a (bio)statistician to perform analyses examining the role of sleep/wake activity in mental health outcomes.  Under the supervision of a faculty Biostatistician, and in collaboration with Department of Psychiatry investigators, the successful candidate will assist with several research projects to analyze data and interpret and communicate results. The ideal candidate is highly independent, organized, detail-oriented, and possesses the ability to quickly learn and use new statistical techniques. Experience with programming in R is required. 

The position is grant funded.


Data Analysis: The individual will select appropriate statistical methods (including both classical and modern approaches), create variables and datasets as needed, and apply the methods to analyze data and interpret the results.  The individual will prepare and present oral and written reports of findings, including tables and graphical displays.

Develop Reports and Manuscripts: The individual will assist in the development of reports or manuscripts for peer-review, including but not limited to scholarly journals.  Additional duties may include review of statistical components of protocols for scientific or IRB review and/or statistical analysis plans.


  • Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Psychology, or a related Social Science field is required.
  • One year of relevant experience with statistical analyses and packages (e.g. SAS, SPSS, R) and Microsoft Office components (e.g. EXCEL, Word, PowerPoint) preferably in research setting.
  • Ability to perform descriptive data analysis; to perform statistical modeling for univariate, clustered, longitudinal or time-to-event data; and to execute specialized analyses under the direction of a PhD biostatistician.  
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills, both oral and written.
  • Interest in learning about diverse areas of psychiatric, sleep, and circadian research.
