UPMC Health Plan is hiring a full-time Underwriter II to support the Underwriting department. This position will have a Monday - Friday daylight schedule. This is a remote/work-from-home role within PA. Out-of-state candidates, who meet the position qualifications, will also be considered.
The Underwriter II will perform rating and risk assessment of manually and experience rated groups. This involves new business prospects as well as inforce groups. Utilize the processes and models developed by the actuarial department and the Manger of Underwriting to assess risk and rate groups rated based on their claims experience while complying with the Underwriting Guidelines. To provide rates to marketing for requested benefit and enrollment changes within the parameters set for experience rated groups. Complete necessary administrative duties involved with maintaining the current composition of these groups in the organization's systems. All of these duties are to be performed within the time constraints established by the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Needs to think outside the box when rating groups and using the rating tools to accommodate quality of data, applicability of the tools factors relative to the carrier/product being rated, and the health plan's rates relative to the competition.
- Utilize and apply the underwriting guidelines appropriately and the ability to perform additional risk analysis.
- Underwriting items such as IBNR, accounting for plan/premium changes, appropriate use of credibility, medical underwriting are to be handled with little effort.
- Provide information to marketing on a consultant level. To be able to explain in layman's terms the factors affecting the proposed rate.
- GEF production and dispersion of those GEFs specific to their cases.
- Assumes a lead role, working with the less experience staff, on manually rated production, both renewals and new business.
- Proficiency in rating groups based on claims experience requiring minimal assistance/guidance. Upon review of this work by more senior underwriters and management less than 8% of work requires material correction.
- Assist marketing with delivering rate explanations to clients.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree with a major in Mathematics, Finance or Business Administration or 2 years of group underwriting experience required.
- Three to four years experience in group underwriting with extensive exposure with rating based on claims experience required.
- Computer skills including knowledge of excel and demonstrate competency in mathematics, attention to detail, and the ability to work in teams is required.
