Research Assistant Clinical Research

Description

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time Research Assistant – Clinical Research to support the ECHO department!

This position will work Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monthly travel to Children's Hospital will be required. Hours and travel are subject to change based on business needs.

This position is grant-funded.

The study name is ECHO (Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes) and is supported by the NIH.  The study involves working with mothers and children ages 6 months to 4 years.  Daily tasks include prepping for appointments, confirming appointments with parents, and completing visits with parent and child.  Both parent and child are included in the study therefore data for both will be collected.  Data entry from all phases of the study will need to be entered (visit-questionnaires).  Conduct Psychological testing (The Bayley Scales) and assist in Child MRI’s as scheduled.  MRI’s are completed at Children’s Hospital in Lawrenceville primarily in the evening. A psychology degree, experience working with adults and toddlers is a plus.  Working in a Team environment a plus. Dr Simhan works in fetal medicine at Magee Hospital.  He has two research departments looking at women’s issues during pregnancy.  The ECHO study is a longitudinal study looking at environmental influences/exposures on Child health outcomes.  Environmental influences include air pollution and chemicals in neighborhoods, stress, sleep and diet.

This employee will complete training for the ECHO study; train with staff regarding all aspects of the study -prepping for visits; confirming visits; paying patients via Vincent; working with team for study visits, completing data entry, completing psychological assessments, and attending MRI scans.

This position will be responsible for processing samples, maintaining laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in research and the ability to work independently under tight deadlines.  

Under Faculty or Research Associate supervision, accurately performs research projects according to established study design and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintains scientific integrity including accurate data storage.
  • When position is required to work within the outpatient clinic, assist with patient care activities to ensure efficient and appropriate service.
  • Administer questionnaires and assists with procedures for obtaining patient screening and recruitment as well as obtaining research specimens.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Assist in obtaining educational resources necessary to perform and interpret research and to remain abreast in research area of function.
  • Perform approved research projects according to defined protocols and procedures including appropriate collection, recording, storage and analysis of data and reporting of results.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology or other basic science or Bachelor of Arts degree in a science or health-related field with a minimum of 15 credit hours in related science courses.
  • Masters degree in Psychology, Social Work or Human Behavior degree HIGHLY preferred. 
  • Experience working with toddlers, children, and adults preferred
  • Clinical Psychology/Social Work experience preferred. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment preferred.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity are necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with patients, staff, and investigators
