Research Associate | Sweet Lab

Description

Our research team is focused on understanding the mechanisms which lead to the generation of psychotic symptoms (delusions and hallucinations) which may occur in multiple disorders. These symptoms are core features of the most common psychotic disorder, schizophrenia, but also occur in about 50% of individuals with Alzheimer Disease. We have proposed that there are common genetic risk factors and vulnerable brain circuits that act together to cause positive symptoms across these disorders. The Research Associate will be assisting in the execution of research protocols and services.

This position is grant funded.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform cell-based and molecular biology assays such as: RNA/DNA/protein extraction, RNA/DNA/protein quantification, mRNA expression analysis (qPCR/RNA-seq), Western blotting, lipid-based transfections in cell culture, site-directed mutagenesis, etc.
  • Maintain mammalian cell lines (e.g., primary rat neurons, HEK cells, and IPSCs) and conduct in vitro assays.
  • Assist with colony maintenance duties of mouse lines
  • Perform IHC, confocal imaging, and image analysis
  • Acquire and perform other research techniques as specified by the PI
  • Maintain an accurate record of data collection methods, results, and interpretations
  • Communicate progress of research projects to research investigators via in-person meetings, oral presentations, and/or written reports
  • Perform general laboratory maintenance tasks including ordering and receiving of lab supplies and lab equipment maintenance

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Counseling, Sociology or related research field or current enrollment in a related Bachelor's Degree program with direct experience in a research environment required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Prior related work experience in a research setting preferred.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
